I really enjoyed just escaping Tapei for a few days and basking in the nature, even if one day was just storms and rain. There was some vegan options at Old Street and at the hotel, and the view across the water was incredible. If you have any physical issues, keep in mind there are a lot of steep steps, hills and cobblestone pathways that may limit accessibility.Guest review byBronwynAustralia - 4.0
Tourist trap.
Tourist trap. Beautiful for photos (if you're ok with hundreds of people in the background) but everything else was bad -- soooo overcrowded. The food was bad (except for pineapple cakes) and everything was only open during the peak of the day - around 10-7, so forget about breakfast or a late dinner. If you insist on seeing it then I think a day trip would suffice, sadly staying the night was not at all beneficial because once the day tourists leave on their tour busses, the whole place shuts down with metal doors on all the shops in the street so doesn't even make for a good photo.Guest review byTaylorUnited States - 8.0

A tip to other guests: you can take a taxi from the train station directly to this hotel and cost 270NTB, instead of spending many minutes climbing the stairs and getting lost like I did. I didn't know earlier and wasted a lot of time. But on my way down the host called a taxi for me, saved me the pain of carrying a suitcase down. Remember to bring your own shampoo and conditioner, and bring a bath towel if you are used to the hotels in Taipei.Guest review bySmile - 10.0

Jiufen, specifically the Old Street area, is no doubt a touristy area. My husband and I had a lot of fun trying the different food and snacks and walking through Old Street and seeing all the lanterns lit up. The morning mist added a little magic to the place. We opted to stay overnight so we can enjoy the village after the tour groups have left during the evening and before they arrived in the morning. Would recommend anyone to do the same. You get to see the charm of Old Street and the village when the crowds are gone. The view of the mountains and sea from the village was breathtaking. I went to visit the mining sights and its related history. I enjoyed the scenic views. As a photography enthusiast I took a lot of average photos as I am not a good photographer. But I like to take a lot photos. Old Jiufen Street was very busy with many tourists and a lot of things to buy and eat. The vintage Chinese room added to our wonderful experience exploring this old town. The gentleman running the hostel was ridiculously friendly. He gave us a lot of local tips and brought us iced teas in the morning! We highly recommend sitting on the rooftop with a beer at the end of the day and just take in the gorgeous scenery.
