Hopland is a very small town.

Hopland is a very small town. You could almost say it's just a wide spot in the road, but you'd be wrong. First, there's its location, 101 miles up US 101 from San Francisco and 170 miles south of Eureka; so, a nice place to break one's road trip north towards Humboldt County and its natural beauty. Then there's the Thatcher Hotel, a lovingly restored late-19th century lodging with a good deal of charm and decor. It has a well-stocked bar for those, like me, who take pleasure in a drink of an evening, or even two. Then, across the street from the Thatcher, there are a couple of fine eateries. One, the Golden Pig, specializes in—you know—pork-based dishes. And for breakfast and lunch, you can't beat the Bluebird Cafe, a local meeting place, friendly as all get-out, and beloved by members of the roadside-cafe cognoscenti. There are other places to eat and drink, but I leave them to you to discover. Give it a try—you just might like it. I know I'll be returning.

Hopland is a small town on the way to other spots.

Hopland is a small town on the way to other spots. The thatcher hotel has been here forever and was in disrepair for a long time. I am so glad to see it rejuvenated and cared for! The Bluebird Cafe is solid for breakfast or lunch, so stay here and continue to your final destination.
