Oelwein is a great little town. We visited 29 Nutrition and enjoyed healthy drinks and smoothies. The Blackbird Coffee Shop was delicious! Hacienda Del Rio has delicious authentic food. Leo’s Italian Restaurant has the best pizza and Italian food! Ma and Pa’s and Oelwein Family restaurant are also great options. Ampersand has great craft beer and is a fun gathering place with friends option. All these places exceeded our expectations! The downtown has a theater and many stores including shoe and clothing stores, several salons, and a variety of other stores.

Oelwein is an economically depressed city. I grew up there and it is nothing like I remember. There are very few options for dining out, virtually no real shopping...a new Dollar General was the main attraction. So many empty store fronts and the meth problem is well known there. In fact, police came to the motel twice during my stay. I would highly recommend staying in another city...I could have pitched a tent and had a better experience.
