This town is pretty much of an overnight stop on the east-west route. It doesn’t have a lot going on but I find it preferable to staying in Bakersfield. If you’re a rail buff you’ll find the loop and the museum interesting.

Tehachapi is a great place for Train buffs and hikers.

Tehachapi is a great place for Train buffs and hikers. Beautiful scenery, close to Bakersfield and Mojave where there are additional points of interest. Red House BBQ is has excellent food if a bit pricey. Downtown has an interesting Train museum in the restored depot, there's an oldschool movie theater downtown called the Hitching Post theater. For train watching there is the Tehachapi loop, one of the seven engineering marvels of the railroad world. I try to always visit when I am in California.

Tehachapi was a halfway point on our way to the central coast of California. We made time in the morning to take the short drive up to the Tehachapi Train Loop Lookout. An interesting fun outdoor activity for any one. We also ate at Don Perico Mexican Restaurant. Great fish tacos. And pick up something at the Kohnen's Country Bakery! The chocolate topped shortbread is delicious. Beautiful selection.

Tehachapi is an excellent location for railway enthusiasts.

Tehachapi is an excellent location for railway enthusiasts. A short 20 minute drive to the famous loop. In town very helpful tourist office (check opening hours) and very fine coffee shop oposite. Railway museum well worth visiting and enthusiastic staff to show you round.

I fly my personal airplane to Tehachapi once or twice a year and I always enjoy my stays. The airport is within walking distance of several hotels and the downtown area with it's restaurants that are good to very good, my favorite is Thai Hachapi. Kohnen's Country Bakery has good coffee and very good pastries. There are several art and gift shops worth checking out as well as a small museum, library, etc. It's a pleasant and safe little town to explore on foot any time of day. It's located in a valley surrounded by mountains and at an altitude of 4,000' so it's much cooler than the surrounding desert towns. People here are friendly.

I was worried because there were a lot of bad reviews, but it was quieter and nicer than I thought. It was also cleaned very well. It's good for the price. If you want a more spacious place, go to a 5-star hotel.

As a PCT hiker, this was a great hotel to stay. The breakfast was excellent and they have laundry facilities on site as well. It's within walking distance of Walmart which was a bonus.
