The architecture of the historical buildings is extraordinary. The people are generally friendly and helpful. Many people speak Russian and Turkish in addition to Uzbek. I've visited Tashkent, Samarkand, and Bukhara. I could make similar comments about all three. However, the most beautiful is Bukhara, followed by Samarkand, and finally Tashkent. If I were to make a criticism, I don't think the city has a Muslim feel when you look at the details. The restrooms are generally clean, but there are no bidet. Furthermore, the call to prayer is inaudible unless you're very close to a mosque. Finding a mosque or masjid to pray is also difficult. Samarkand is absolutely stunning! The majestic madrassas of Registan, the peaceful Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, and the impressive Gur-e-Amir mausoleum where Tamerlane rests are unforgettable. The vibrant local markets and the rich history around every corner made this trip truly magical. If you like history and Islamic architecture, you MUST visit...
If you like history and Islamic architecture, you MUST visit. The city is a remnant of the USSR; they are still running electric trams from that era (not a bad thing, though). Getting around the city is very easy with a taxi-hailing app called Yandex Go. The city is extremely clean, and the roads are wide. It's unfortunate that, like other cities, they have introduced electric scooters, and the young people seem to think that you, as a pedestrian, should get out of their way. One of the most fascinating cities I've visited, with a stellar collection of monuments, who's upkeep is one to be envied. The light show at the Registan complex in the evening was so spectacular, I had to watch it on both evenings I was there! The Shah-I-Zinda ensemble is something out of this world, and the interiors of the mausoleum of Amir Temur are breathtaking. Samarqand is very easy on the eyes, a pleasant city to walk around in, has plenty of good restaurants and cafes, and is overall just a joy to visit. Since the important monuments are mostly around Registan, and not spread out in the city, if one stays in that area, then one does not get overwhelmed by the urban alndscape and ambiance, as it happens in Tashkent. We were able to see the blue dome of the Timur Mussoleum from our window. The guest house is full of wonderful antiquities and is located very close to registan square and other main touristic sites. The star of the guest house is the host Sanjar, who is helpful in any situation and does his best to make you feel at home. They allowed us to do an early check-in without extra cost. The room is a good size with such a nice vibe. The washroom is a bit small but the decoration in it makes up for it. The location seems a bit off but it's easily accessible by taxi. The hotel has a back side area, like a patio, which is really nice.
