Simply going for an evening walk in the neighbourhood is a great way to get a feel for the place (on the back, quieter streets where all the homestays are, not the main drag obviously). We stayed in Ban Lac, it was great for accomodation, food, shoping and as a departure point for bike rides and trips. I was in the middle of very beautiful paddy field by ridding bicycle in early morning. Get free bicycle at Homestay. Ownner helped me to book the ticket from Hotel to Hanoi city with cheap price.
