At the end of our tour through game parks in SA we enjoyed this really comfortable lodge! We were last guests before the owner changes. We did not know before that we had to leave the car just behind the entrance gate of Welgevonden Game Reserve. A ranger picked us up after a nice welcome drink and drove us and our luggage on a jeep 45 minutes to the lodge. Candice is a very tough young lady who took excellent care of us. Thank you so much! It seemed that we we got the best located chalet with shower inside and open air (!), comfortable equipped terrace with nice view watching some animals passing by. Excellent and rich meals! The rent seemed quite high but - to our surprise - all game drives were included! Marvin, our guide, was eager to find the Cheeta for us - without success. And of the Big 5 we only met rhinos and elephants.

Wonderfully friendly and attentive staff. Our game ranger, Byron, was fantastic. You could really tell that he's passionate about what he does and was determined to ensure we got to experience the best the bush had to offer. Obviously there's a good amount of luck involved, but thanks to Byron's skill and determination, we boxed off the big 5 in our first two days and got to witness some very rare sightings, such as a leopard and her cub feeding at night and a one week old baby rhino. Another real bonus is that Makweti is permitted to operate two game vehicles for only 10 guests, meaning there is only max 6 persons in your vehicle. Often me and my partner had the vehicle to ourselves - while some other lodges were cramming 14 into a single car! Our room was cleaned immaculately every day. The complimentary decanter of port was a nice feature (I think it was complimentary?!). The main lodge had stunning views of the bush and cozy fireplaces for the chilly days. The staff really went the extra mile wherever they could, with hot water bottles, fleece ponchos, blankets and handwarmers for the cold weather game drives. Hot towels and ceremonial drums to welcome you back to the lodge. The food was a real highlight and something to really look forward to after each drive. On first impression, it would seem like the portions were a little too small (I'm a big eater), but I actually never felt hungry at all while I was there. I would recommend Makweti to any travelers looking to experience all the wildlife of the bush in comfort and luxury.

This lodge is AMAZING! Both common room and private rooms are so lovely. It’s very open and with a lot of windows so you can enjoy the beautiful view at all time. All the staff did so much effort to make our stay as nice as possible. The food was also sooo good. We enjoyed the game drives a lot and even managed to see the full big 5 during our 2 nights at this lodge.

The park must really consider ending more Lions .

The park must really consider ending more Lions .I do believe the area is large enough. Most guest come to areas like yours to see Lion's but it was hard for many to see them cos you don't have enough of them.I also felt sorry for your Rangers cos they become other stressed and put under pressure by guest who want to see Lion's

Welgevonden is a great safari venue for a quick, malaria free trip close to Johannesburg. The Waterberg area is beautiful. It also has the Big5 which is a bonus. Guests leave their vehicles at the Main gate and get picked up by the lodge they are staying at. You can only drive through the reserve in a safari vehicle with a guide. I can highly recommend this reserve if you prefer a malaria free area.

The Reserve is close to Joburg, just about 2.5 hours drive. I have been there a number of times already, and will be coming back. It is a different world there where life has it's own pace. A little paradise.

The best thing about Welgevonden is the feeling of being totally isolated. It is set into the hillside, and each chalet is far enough away from the next one to make it feel secluded. The Game drives are absolutely amazing; all the big 5 - lions, buffalo, lots of rhino, and if you are really luck leopard & cheetah - as well as hippo, giraffe, zebra, lots of antelope too. There are no private vehicles allowed in the reserve which has really helped the rhino population to recover. The night sky is amazing if astronomy is your thing

The reserve is well managed but the roads can be improved, the number of predators can be increased an the sightings can be managed better, the ethical rules of not stressing the animals by reducing the number of vehicles per sighting, the competition between game rangers must be managed better which will reduce the incidents
