The greeting was extremely warmful; prior to that, the staff had arranged the parking and shuttle very efficiently (you cannot park in the Sassi in Matera). In the heart of an amazing town, the hotel is just fabulous (the "caves" have been turned into wonderful sleeping alcoves and rooms), and the staff is always there to help --with a smile! Don't miss it.
Sassi di Matera, Matera
Overlooking Matera’s Sasso Barisano, Fra I Sassi Residence is set in restored 17th-century buildings inside the Matera Sassi UNESCO site area. It offers a sun terrace and air-conditioned rooms with stone walls and views of the historical centre. I honestly cannot recommend this place enough!!! The service was the best we had experienced in our 3 months in Italy. The staff were friendly, professional and quick to respond. I explained that we were there for my husband’s birthday and they went above and beyond to make our stay special. They helped with suggestions and reservations for dinner as well as tours. They were happy to help with any questions we had and you get a free map with suggested routes to see all the sights. You get much-needed cold water upon arrival. I requested a bottle of Prosecco in our room for my husband’s birthday and they happily obliged and provided a fanatic local bottle of Prosecco. We stayed in a private suit and the room was fantastic! It was spacious, with a huge bath and shower and seperate toilet. It had a TV, coffee station and air conditioning (which we didn’t need to use despite the extreme heat in Matera as the room is nice and cool as it is in a cave setting). The breakfast was fantastic and the view from the terrace is incredible! I also love that they have eco-friendly processed in place to minimise their footprint. We will definitely be back when in Matera!

This is a fantastic hotel with history, charm and a worldwide outlook in its beautiful interior design, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and even a Scandinavian corner. The view from the pool area is stunning and equally so the sound of the bells ringing in the small towns’ many churches.. Welcoming hosts, good breakfast, high service.. We had a nice room with balcony facing the town.
We liked everything! We booked the Suite in Cave room - U Firn du Cidd with the bed on a transparent mezzanine above what was the old oven. The room was absolutely stunning! My husband being an architect/designer for once could not find fault & believe me he’s very picky when it comes to hotel bedrooms. All the staff were extremely helpful. The Cafe Bistrot served delicious food & cocktails! The barman was so friendly & made our stay very special!
Absolutely stunning apartment, located ideally, with the most amazing view. The apartment itself is perfect, beautiful, a " luxury cave", comfortable, with everything you need. Very comfortable big bed. The design is stunning, all the details have been carefully selected, including the lighting in the apartment which highlight the cave-like interior. The host is super, allowed us to check in early, replied immediately. It's an 11/10. Definitely recommended!
The room is huge and the contemporary industrial design is stunning. It comes with AC and stylish facilities. Super romantic. Located in a quiet area and very close to all the touristic bits. Simona, the host, was extremely welcoming, responsive and friendly, giving us amazing tips on where to go and eat.
Absolutely superb hotel in a brilliant location. It is brand new, set in a cave, with stunning architecture and interior design - beautiful fittings and serene bathroom. Perfect 😍
The room was very nice and clean. Stylish interior design and a lovely view from the balcony. The hostess is a very friendly and warm lady. My son also appreciated Youtube available on the TV.
This boutique hotel was amazing, room was gorgeous and very comfy beds. it was right in the centre of the sassi where you could walk and explore all of Matera with plenty of restaurants / cafes on the doorstep. The staff were lovely, in particular Michele who also prepared super breakfasts each morning!
Wonderfully presented and spotless property (the host is an interior designer!), in a great location. Very gracious and warm welcome ( including a cold bottle of Prosecco and other provisions)
