This place has incredible atmosphere. It used to be an elementary school until they closed it a few years ago. It’s all still intact, the blackboards, the gym, etc. A few minutes walk from the main Magome street. The bunk beds were comfortable. The staff was pleasant and friendly. Looking back, I wish I stayed longer than one night.

This accomodation is 11/10. It is spacious, beautiful, clean, inspiring and relaxing. It is one of those place that influence the whole trip to the better. To the best. The terrace, the bath tub, the rooms, I don’t even know where to start. It is so good. The host Takumi (and his family) are the most wonderful people ever. He picked up our luggage and drove us to the airport. That is crazy.

Even though the location is distant, it provides peacefulness. Breakfast and dinner were both thoughtfully prepared. Additionally, it is delectable. The quantity is enormous; it is nearly impossible to consume it in its entirety. The thermal spring is outstanding. It is very relaxing to soak. The owner is exceedingly hospitable. I was generally quite impressed.

This accommodation is 400 years old and managed by the 15th generation now. The history is very special. Even the formal emperor staid at this accommodation.
You can really experience the authentic Japanese life.
Food was delicious, the best food we had in Japan untill now. We hear that the chef build his cooking skills at a Michelin star restaurant and that is what you see and taste at the food.
When we arrived we were (as both having back problems) worried about the traditions futon beds, but this was no problem at all!
Nice to do from here is the Nakasendo walk from Magome to Tsumago. The hotel helped us with a useful map and arrange a transfer for us to the starting point.

We stayed for two nights so we could hike the Nakasendo Trail (Magome to Tsumago); allowing additional time to travel there and then time to relax before heading off. It seems a bit out of the way on the map, but that's exactly what we loved about the experience. Sakashita is in the mountains, is very quiet and non-touristy. If you love getting away from the hustle and bustle of the larger cities, then this will fit the bill. The host was wonderful; he drove us to the trailhead (10 minutes) and gave clear instructions how to return, via a short bus and train ride. We were given dinner recommendations and chose Shuku Rin. Good choice. The host there was fantastic; she wasn't open until 6pm, but opened early as she saw us outside, most likely looking a bit sad and lost. This was a shared home, with a shared kitchen, sitting rooms, toilet and shower. We consider ourselves fortunate that we had the house to ourselves. An absolute must; stop at the restaurant partway on the trail and have Goehi Mochi (toasted rice balls on sticks, with warm sesame and walnut soy sauce.) What I would do to have one now... Our regret? Not having one (or two) orders each.
