What did I like? Where do I start? I liked...no, I loved every minute of my stay at Maqai. It is as close to paradise as I'll allow my pragmatic mind to entertain. From the relative remoteness to the natural beauty, the super-relaxed atmosphere to the genuine warmth of the staff, this is a very special place. More of a traveller vibe than that of the well-worn tourist path of the islands closer to Nadi. Slightly rustic? Sure, but only in the best possible way. Cathy (manager) ran as tight a ship as possible on a tropical island in the Pacific. She was welcoming and prompt with her email replies to my questions regarding all the various water sports and cultural experiences on the island. In no particular order, the following staff members quickly began to feel like old friends...Navo, Etta, Sala, Emosi, Soni, Tui, Junior, Jale, Johnny, Mama's Soke & Luce, Netta and Suki (four legged and furry). They all exude such an authentically friendly yet service oriented approach to their individual roles. I can't speak highly enough of how they looked after me. It is up to you how much or how little activity you schedule into your day on Qamea. Highlights included surf trips to the outer reefs, snorkelling and lunch on the Island Tour, the Sunday morning village visits and church service, and the food. Crikey, the food. I had to ask for slightly less portions by dinner time, or I would have no room left for evening kava with the locals! If you're reading this review and considering/comparing it with other options in Fiji, fair enough, but I honestly feel it is a rare and rich experience worth every cent and the added travel time to get there. We enjoyed our stay in all aspects. The lovely family who run the place are locals which means you get great recommendations from them, highly recommend. The rooms are very comfortable to guarantee a good sleep.They have the perfect place. We thank you so much for all the kind hospitality, we are lucky to experience all the goodness

The snorkelling out the back of the hotel was lovely. There was a large staff to customer ratio which meant there was always someone to help you. Lots of lovely plants at the hotel and the rooms were nice. Free water refills is always appreciated.

Aroha was a stunning setting. Thanks for having us! The bedrooms were lovely and clean. The food from the restaurant was delicious. Our hosts and the staff were really friendly and attentive. One of the best places we’ve stayed on our trip!

I felt like at home,they give the feeling to be a part of the family.I had every morning breakfast of my choice and always a very delicious dinner.

Best place in fiji. Very very nice people, good Ford (fresh fishes from the sea), fantastisc rief snorckeling. Next time I am staying länger. Werner

If you think about Homestay experience, this is the perfect place ! Sarah and Sam are absolutely amazing! More than helpful, really kind and mindful! Thank you for your kindness and knowledge! Home is close to the airport and a bus stop. Sarah and Sam have really good tips on how to visit the island and will adapt to your way of traveling:) The food is absolutely great, and I garanty, you won't leave the table hungry ;) The room was clean and tidy, with everything you need, even a newly added AC ! The caretakers were awesome. It was easy to organise everything through the owner. Diving and snorkeling next door. Great kitchen set up. Insane views! Comfortable bed and living space . So peaceful and private.

As snorkelers, we weren't sure if we'd fit in at a dive resort, however, our concerns were completely unfounded. Heading out on the dive boat in the mornings and exploring the reef with a guide (while the divers explored other deeper parts of the reef) was exactly the experience we were hoping for. From the moment we checked in, we knew we were somewhere different to any other resort we'd stayed at. First and foremost, the staff are what make Taveuni Dive Resort so special. HIGHLY recommend the meal plan as the food is incredibly tasty and beautifully presented (besides, there's no kitchen in the bures, so cooking your own food is nigh impossible... and why would you want to!?). Speaking of bures, although no air conditioning, the dual fans were sufficient to keep us cool on the hot nights. Windows are all protected with mesh, so no issues with bugs. The shower was great (best in the afternoon when water is hottest). The king (maybe super king) bed was really comfortable. It was quite a novelty for us to have a turndown service! Starlink WiFi Internet is fast, but limited to the restaurant area. Cellphone reception is present, but patchy and slow data rates. For location, the resort is only a 15min boat ride from the reef. It's a 1.5hr drive to Lavena (one way) over some very rough dirt roads (the sealed sections are a blessing). The dive/snorkel outings are half day activities, so it's possible to do something else in the afternoon. The pool was great afterwards! Breakfast was selected the night before (at dinner) and had a good range to choose from. The breakfasts were excellent (as was all the food!). All meals are served at the restaurant. The staff catered for gluten free (banana bread was so good). Coffee, tea and filtered water was complimentary (dairy, soy and almond milk was available). Packed lunches can also be booked the night before to pick up at breakfast if heading out for the day.
