Our hosts, Véronique and Joseph, welcomed us with good hospitality, humour and ease. The house and garden are beautiful and full of character, and our room was furnished with interesting ornaments, furniture and books. We enjoyed our conversations with our hosts, including during a shared breakfast outside with them and other guests, where we enjoyed home made jams, good coffee and fresh bread. We learned a little about life in the area. Our stay here was the highlight of our two-week cycling and rail trip around the Charente and La Rochelle. Great value too. And safe overnight storage for our bikes.

It was a typical continental breakfast and Frank and Victor ensured that we had everything we needed, and were terrifically sociable and generous hosts. The view was stunning overlooking the vineyards across the valley. The place was tranquil and I would describe it as heaven on earth. We were upgraded to a full gîte without any extra cost in order to enjoy the picturesque view, and the extra facéties to self cater. This was by far the best week of our holiday in France and we would highly recommend it.

Easy for my dog, walks next to the house. I loved the surroundings. The house was as described but wouldn’t suit everyone.

Wonderfully charming house that has been in the same family for centuries. We had a lovely meal with Danielle & her son Luca, who speak French, Italian & English (& perhaps other languages).

this was a very special stay for me and my mum. it didn’t feel like a hotel, more like staying in a lovely, welcoming family house. we loved the shared cognac with all the family! the house itself is a jewel, full of history and with a warm soul, nestled in beautiful landscape. hope to come back one day for longer!

This house is full of family history. It is on the outskirts of Birac so all shops and food are a few miles away but you would realise that when booking. The host made me a meal but not sure it is guaranteed. The house is worth a visit in itself.

If you want to stay in a 250-year old castle, La Cure du Maine Charles is your place. Preserved over the years and nicely furnished with the family's antique furniture you feel transported back in time. An exceptional building to understand how families lived in former times. We appreciated the history even more after Luca, the owner, shared his family history with us. He made us very welcomed in English which he speaks beside French and Italian.
