Staying in a monastery in Koya is a rare experience, but for those who'd like to have that with minimal costs, there are two options: either room-or-bathroom sharing lodgings, or Sekishoin! You get to enjoy the privacy of your own room, for a reasonable price compared to everything else around. And, to top it off, the people here were lovely. There were complementary woven bracelets upon checking in. I was late to my breakfast, and I was pleasantly surprised to find it waiting for me (and needless to say, the food is delicious). There are also explanatory notes pertaining to various things in Japanese culture or monastery life, such as clothing or meals. Final note, the futon was super comfy and perfectly warm despite the cold snowy winter.

We loved the attention to detail, especially the vintage record player with Japanese vinyls and how well stocked the kitchen was (oil, spices, rice, coffee etc. - the best we had in Japan!). Staff was very accommodating. Very spacious, perfect for our group. We had to change the group size due to a mistake of our own and it was very easy to resolve, thank you for that. We had a great time!

- Beautifully decorated room - Very comfortable bedding - Really friendly and helpful staff - Great facilities and amenities. There is a kitchen for guests, and the lobby also doubles as a cafe. That's a huge benefit if you like coffee! - I loved going for walks around the area. There is a beautiful temple just next door. - Great location for visits around Koyasan.

- Super clean and tidy - Really comfortable bed/beddings - AC (heating/cooling) - THE LOVELIEST PEOPLE EVER (who go above and beyond for their guests) - Very tasty food at the restaurant - Convenient location (only a couple of minutes away from Konpon Daitō – The Great Pagoda) and easy to get around in general - I booked only 1 night as I was on a tight schedule. In retrospect, a minimum of 2 nights would’ve been a lot better to explore Koyasan

Nari was such an incredible host, everything was clean and he was very knowedgeable about the whole area of Koyasan and gave excellent recommendations. He is so kind and the rooms are so beautiful. Everything is super clean and cleaned multiple times daily. I came in very late on the first night and he was so helpful in trying to help me find out how to get there the best way. The only thing I regret is that I didn't stay there three nights instead of the two. I loved Hachi Hachi and would recommend everyone to go there.

It was warm and comfortable - the owner made it even more welcoming with a comprehensive introduction to the town and sound advice. It’s just a 2 min walk to the cemetery, the bus stop that brings you to the cable car station, and entry to a hiking path.

I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere appreciation for the truly outstanding experience I had during my recent stay at your hotel. Every aspect of my visit surpassed expectations, making it a memorable and delightful stay. First and foremost, the food at your establishment was nothing short of exceptional. The accommodations were equally impressive. My room was not only impeccably clean and well-maintained but also tastefully decorated, creating a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. The attention to detail did not go unnoticed, and it truly contributed to the overall sense of luxury and relaxation. Of course, what truly sets your hotel apart is the unparalleled hospitality extended by your staff. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted with warmth and professionalism.

Great hosts, good location, very clean and comfortable. Lucky to have their restaurant on site for dinner - one of nicest meals we had in Japan - that is, home cooked by Guest House owner, an outstanding chef.

Very friendly and accommodating hosts! The guest house was at a great location (very close to the bus stop and a convenience store) and the family room was very spacious and clean. Would definitely stay here again and I highly recommend it if you are not planning to do a temple stay at Koyasan! I also highly recommend visiting the cafe - great croissants and drinks!

Great location right in the heart of koyasan town. Very convenient to walk to any attractions nearby. Room facilities are up to bar with some 2-3 star hotel I have been to. Tommy is a super friendly host. He recommends a lot of great local experiences from places to have dinner to different trekking trails and temple rituals you can attend for free. Tommy and his wife run a cafe next door and it’s open from 8am which is a rare thing in koyasan (most shops open at 11am). You get a big discount if you stay at Tommy guest house too ❤️

Tommy Guest House is one of the few guesthouses in Koyasan and certainly the best. Our room was very well equipped as described and quite big. Everything was extremely clean, there were clean towels, new water and tea on the second day. The guesthouse is just a few steps away from the bus stop in the center of Koyasan. Tommy is such a warm and courteous host. The contact before our stay was always quick and super nice. A clear recommendation!

A wonderful Guesthouse in a quieter part of Koyasan but within easy walking distance to all the major attractions. Extremely clean and tidy with large shared living spaces. Conveniently located close to the only Family Mart in town, a bus stop and a little park. Nori, the host, is most helpful, friendly and knowledgeable about the local area. I highly recommend Hachi Hachi.

We love our stay at Guest House Suzumeno Kakurembo! Our hosts were so friendly, funny and welcoming! Our room was spotless clean(!), spacious and super cosy! Heating is available (it can get really cold in Koyasan at night) and we also had a water dispenser (hot/cold) in our room which was soo convenient! They also have a restaurant with amazing food! We recommend this guesthouse! Thank you so much for your hospitality!
