The location was perfect, and the owner was very helpful with recommendations for places to eat, things to see, and other tips. A special thanks goes to him and his wife on our last day, when we had to be evacuated due to a tsunami warning. They took care of us and brought us to safety further inland. They made sure we stayed informed, drove us around to find food, and helped us find a place to sleep for the night. This experience truly reflects their warm hospitality. I discovered the three sacred mountains of Haguro, Gassan, and Yudono, part of the Dewa Sanzan, and I wanted to experience them all. The traditional accommodation was simple, beautiful, and full of charm .Bus stop and great food spot just across the street. I truly didn’t want to leave. Wataru was so great during our stay. He gave us a lot of recommendations of things to do / where to eat around Hirosaki and even gave us lifts places since we didn’t have a car! The garden suite room was stunning, and the breakfasts were amazing.
The house is beautiful and in a nice neighbourhood. We got a warm welcome and enjoyed the stay very much. The view into the garden was like in the picture - lovely. The tatami-room was elegant and cozy. We were happy to enjoy the hospitality of the host family. Arigatou gouzaimasu!
It's a pretty good hostel with everything you expect. I liked that my room didn't have more than 4 beds because more people means worse sleep. The showers had nice warm water and the toilets were clean. There's 2 kitchens and a large lounge with a comfy couch and 2 very nice cats. The other guests were all very nice as well.
Eiju is super nice and quite knowledgeable about Japan! He was a great host and fun to talk to. He will always give you recommendations for your next trip wherever you're going. Also the house was new, clean and close to everything to do in Matsushima. Would stay there again and recommend it to anyone!
Great place to stay Taka, Oraphin and Yui are great hosts and we really enjoyed our time in Zao. The location is perfect easy access to #3 and restaurants in the village.
The interior is a little dated and the rooms a bit retro, but it is very quiet, inexpensive, has beautiful surroundings, and a great selection of onsen. In the evening I used the outdoor onsen and enjoyed the full moon. The next morning I used the indoor and met some friendly locals.
Oraphin and Taka (and of course the little one) are the most lovely hosts! Location is excellent and you are basically within a 10 min walk to all onsen and ropeways. One of the public baths is literally 20 seconds away! The space heater is also amazing and the first floor common space is always toasty :) Matsuo house is a must stay if you want a homestay-like experience in Japan :)
The staff are very friendly and speak english. There is bar attached with a mixture of tourists and locals where I was able to learn a lot about the local area and culture. The surrounding area has a lot of natural beauty; with mountains, forests and lakes all reachable by bike (which you can rent). The hostel its self also has a common area and kitchen, which are very cosy in winter. The facilities and bedding is first rate.
