The medieval settlement lies on the river bank between two large hills, flanked by the Stolzalpe (1817 m) to the north and the Frauenalpe (1997 m) to the south, which is the town's home mountain. A wide asphalt road leads up from the town centre to the Murauer Hütt, on the side of the latter. An easy, family-friendly hiking trail leads up to the grassy, flat summit of Frauenalpe, with its magnificent panoramic views. The Kreischberg ski region, one of the most famous and best equipped ski resorts in the province, is a few km west of Murau. A gondola lift, which also operates during the summer months, takes you up to over 1700 metres in minutes, from where you can make great hikes to the top of the Kreischberg (2002 m) or even further up to the Kirbisch (2140 m). On the northern slopes of the Kreischberg, you can admire the largest stand of pine conifers in Central Europe.
