Sleeping in Ali’s Underground allows you to tick off this amazing experience from your "bucket list"! Previous guests have spoken highly of us in all aspects. Completely relax in the tranquillity and majesty of a comfortable cave! This studio has natural rock walls and many special features that make it unique. Please note that all beds are located in the same space as the living area. You will relax in a modern, clean, distinctive underground residence which is a fully equipped studio. Live like a local! The temperature throughout the year only varies between 22-26 degrees, but in a really hot summer, the air conditioner and fans will provide air to circulate the air and refresh you when it's hot outside. Located at the end of a No Through Road in the highest hill in Coober Pedy, you'll have 270-degree views of the sunrise, sunset and the desert towards the Kanku-BreakAways. There have been up to 3 large caravans parked in the large space out the front as tourists come for their once-in-a-lifetime sleep fully underground- there is ample room for everyone! Please note that only guests who have booked are permitted to enter Ali's Underground Studio. IF you are bringing a PET with you, you must phone Ali to discuss their needs. Guidelines are set out in a photo on this website. Not all pets are permitted to stay so please ensure you check. If accepted there will be an additional fee per pet per night. After 8 years of living in this amazing community of Coober Pedy, my husband and I have now stopped paid work. We were happy wanderers in our caravan for 2 years before settling nearer our grandchildren... we still enjoy the outdoors! Our fabulous housekeeper lives next door to Ali’s Underground Studio. I like to do all the interesting work on reservations and guest issues, so if you have any questions, please call me. Can I encourage you to stay for at least two nights to give yourself time to relax from the long drive and experience at least one or two full days in this unique place? When you come, you’ll forget all about the cares of your world and be immersed in this weird and wonderful community they call Coober Pedy – and don’t be surprised if you wished you’d stayed longer!

Coober Pedy is the opal capital of the world, with a stunning lunar landscape, an underground lifestyle and a fascinating natural history. Follow Ali’s 2-page Tourist Tips for great details on how to make the most of your time. Free underground exhibitions can be found in the Desert Caves and Umoona Museum on the main street. Opal shops are scattered on both sides of Hutchison Street, each with their own specialties. A MUST visit is to the Serbian church-make sure to turn on the light in front of the stained glass + venture upstairs to find another sculpture on the wall after the baptismal, and look down at the carvings in the front. Ali's Underground is just above the Catacomb Church. Walk up to the wooden cross inside the Catacomb Church and "look up" to see how far you are underground! All churches are open 24/7. It is best to drive to the beautiful Kanku-BreakAway Park in the morning (keep the sun on your back for the best view). Head towards Oodnadatta, then turn left into the BreakAways and drive alongside the famous Dog Fence. The second lookout is on the right side of the first big lookout – it’s breathtaking!
