Alston itself is a very quiet and remote place, its nestled in between other tiny villages and surrounded by moors. Surprisingly it has all you need in terms of shops and cafes in the day time and is peaceful at night. The house is lovely and...

Host Information

Host review score
Imaginatively designed self-catering accommodation, skilfully combining contemporary and traditional styles. Ideally located in a secluded corner of Alston, in the heart of the North Pennines, with shops and pubs within 5 minutes' walk, but close to open countryside. These 'apartment'-style 2-storey houses have open-plan and split-level living areas. The bedrooms are more traditionally furnished, all featuring crisp Egyptian cotton bedlinen. With views towards the churchyard and the nearby hills beyond, two houses have balconies perfect for enjoying a glass of wine in the fresh air, while Millstream features the relaxing sound of the old mill stream running through the patio. Sowerberry is equipped to enable group bookings taking all 3 houses to eat and relax together. It is the place to come if you are looking for somewhere stylish to relax with the family. Millstream, with its super-king bed is the ideal setting for a romantic getaway, but if you want to bring your dog, Naworth has a cosy cottage feel and is where we welcome pets.
At the heart of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Alston is an excellent base to explore this relatively undiscovered and unspoilt area, with its natural landscapes, tumbling waterfalls, and a wealth of wildlife. Alston is a market town steeped in history with a good range of individual shops, tearooms, local crafts, and character inns serving traditional ales and good food. You can forget your car and enjoy many good local walks right on the doorstep, from gentle riverside rambles to challenging hikes across the fells. Local attractions include the South Tynedale Railway, the Hub Museum and Nenthead Mines, all run by volunteers, and Killhope lead-mining museum where you can learn more about the area’s fascinating industrial and social history. There is also Epiacum, a Roman fort just a few miles from Alston, and a waterfall you can walk behind. At the hub of five routes, it is also an ideal centre for exploring Hadrian’s Wall and Northumberland National Park to the North, Durham City (world heritage site) to the east, beautiful Upper Teesdale to the south-east, the Yorkshire Dales to the south, and the Lake District to the west all within an hour’s drive
