The house dates from the late 14th century and has a fascinating history. King Charles II stayed in the 1670s. Most famously, John Bunyan, the author of “Pilgrims Progress“ (still the third biggest selling book ever in the English language!) was interrogated and imprisoned here in 1660. Rooms in the main house have free toiletries, a Nespresso coffee machine, a kettle and have access to a mini fridge with fresh milk. The rooms in the garden have fresh milk. PLEASE NOTE-THERE ARE NO TELEVISIONS. We are a small B and B and have only the facilities you would expect in a small B and B. The King's Room is a 17th century time capsule. It has a dramatic crimson damask state bed, 17th and 18th century antiques, and the hugest bath imaginable! The Tabor Room has an Anglo-Indian 1850's four poster bed and ensuite bathroom, whilst the Wingate Room (2/3 of a Tudor great chamber) has a 20' ceiling height, a Regency four poster and a private (BUT NOT ENSUITE-please note!) bathroom. The two cottage rooms (Bunyan and Burwell) are in a converted farm building. They have ensuite shower rooms, and twin beds (Bunyan) and a double (Burwell). Each has a high vaulted ceiling and engineered wooden floors. The Burwell Room has just one step to negotiate in order to gain access. BREAKFAST IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR THESE ROOMS. If staying in the main house, you are welcome to make use of one of the reception rooms to read and relax. We are not heating that room at present, however, because of the huge rise in heating costs. Bring a jumper and it should be ok! Note that we do not, unless you receive a specific confirmation from us (i.e we have confirmed to you that we allow dogs in your case), allow dogs. If you send a request to keep a dog and we have not answered (for whatever reason) that message, that will not constitute assent. Unfortunately, even though we have a dog ourselves, many visitors have not properly controlled their pets.
I am David. I live here with my family. I'm an ex-solicitor, football club director and current antique porcelain dealer. I have a fascination with interior design, love cooking, art, antiques and architecture. The main house is over 600 years old. It oozes character. It is extraordinarily untouched by inappropriate modern development. Every room has beautiful period features, most of which are at least 300 years old. There is panelling of the highest quality in the Great and Little Parlours. Upstairs, the King’s Room and the Wingate Room are extraordinary historical survivals. The Wingate Room is a former Tudor great chamber, of which there are only a handful of similar examples in the UK. It was subdivided by the Georgians to create a bedroom and a corridor, but the Tudor magnificence is easily appreciated. The Kings Room, by contrast, was rebuilt in the 1670’s and almost every item of decoration dates from that time. The house is packed with antiques and quirky objects. There are artworks galore.
Harlington Manor is situated in the pretty village of Harlington (which has some 16 listed buildings) and which has beautiful views over the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The house is just 15m from Milton Keynes, 38m from Cambridge, 40m from London and 12m from London Luton Airport-to which trains run all night from Harlington Station. The station is three minutes walk away. The rail journey time to the airport is 12 minutes. The house is 1 mile from J12 of the M1.
