Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.
Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.
Whether you’re searching for a cottage, a modern hotel, or a cheap hostel, Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in the area.

Durham Cathedral is a must, of all the cathedrals i have visited this must rate as the highest. It was warm, packed with history and information. Great shop, cafe and clean toilets.
Durham guided tour of the Castle is also very good, just be aware to do either or both, its going up quite a steep climb.
You must take the time to visit the living museum at Beamish, although be prepared to allow two days or at least a day and a half. There is so much to see, and the interaction with the characters on the site is fantastic and so informative. Enjoy the vintage tram and bus rides and dont miss out on puffing Billy.
FInally make sure you see the Bowes Museum, it will probably take you 3-4 hours but its worth it.

Durham is a stunning university town with a traditional marketplace. The architecture is beautiful, there are a few museums and lots of good places to eat. No visit is complete without visiting the cathedral!

Breakfast and food were great , steak a little pricey for a pub in my opinion as it was premium steakhouse price. Bar staff had 4 tables to serve and did at their leisure which one table waited 40mins , very slow hate to see a full house. Rooms below modern standard , bathroom well below , location not far from durham. Staff really nice. Forgetably stay 👍

The cathedral is amazing and well worth a visit.
The cathedral is amazing and well worth a visit. Lovely stained glass windows. Burial place of St. Cuthbert. The castle is a short walk away but not so easy to access it seems. The Dun Cow is said to be the oldest pub in Durham. It's a cosy stop for a drink and is worth a visit. The Station House below the railway station is an interesting looking spot tucked away under the railway bridge. It looks like a nice place to go for a drink prior to any train journey. There are some lovely bridges and viaducts in the city. Leonard's cafe is another great spot with delicious cakes. Buses are a good way to get around if you don't have a car. The ring road around Durham is too close to the city centre and spoils it somewhat for pedestrians. There are too many busy roads and roundabouts close to the city centre.
Very nicely stylishly furnished property. Wild garden. Comfortable beds. Quiet, pleasant location. Very convenient for amenities such as shops, pub, take-aways and small supermarket and vet all nearby. Beautiful woodland walk (Aykley Woods) a few minutes away with amazing views of Durham Cathedral. 30 mins drive to wonderful beaches. Good bus connections or you can walk into Durham City Centre in about 25 mins. We had a few family members over to celebrate my granddaughter's 18th birthday. Handy for Durham University. Very dog friendly.
The location was central - perfect for exploring Durham.
The room was super comfortable with a luxury feel, soft sheets, comfortable bed, and great ensuite shower facilities.
I liked the toiletries and there were plenty of white towels, too.
Subtle lighting and huge flat screen TV, and good tea and coffee facilities with a little bottle of real milk given to me before I went to my room.
The stained glass and architecture of the hotel is interesting and attractive.
With the Great North Run that weekend, all hotels were asking more than double their usual rate. So decided to pay for the luxury of a Delta hotel for the same price, and so glad we did! Cheerful welcoming staff, and oh what a gorgeous room! Everything one could wish for in a beautiful room, and could've quire easily stayed in it all night rather than attend the night out we'd travelled for. Whenever we are in Durham again, I will book this room, absolutely perfect!
I spent 2 weeks at The City Hotel and really enjoyed my stay. The room was very spacious and beautifully decorated, with a large bathroom, everything in very good condition and very clean. The staff is exceptionally nice: manager and housekeeping person were always ready to help me and treated me very well. The location is perfect; right in the centre of Durham, and a short walking distance to Durham University. Wifi works well. Fully recommend.
A great all round place with a sense of luxury. The hotel had a restaurant attached which was particularly convenient on a Sunday night . The restaurant had authentic Indian cuisine which was tasty and not too difficult for those of us who find ery spicey foods difficult. Breakfast was good . Staff very helpful with suggestions of how to best travel back and forth to the old centre of Durham.
Really nice place. Very elegant and on a quiet street. The proprietor was very friendly and helpful. We stayed in 7 places in the UK and this topped them all. You can do Durham in a day but I liked how small and charming it is. Restaurant recommendations are Cellar Door for a fancy meal and Whitechurch Free House for a very good meal and a nice walk to it. Lots of good breakfast options.
Tthe staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was lovely. The location is good as you can walk into Durham and, if you are driving from the A1, it is conveneient as you don't have to go into the City Centre and free parking is plentiful. It is also incredible value for money as Durham hotels are usually on the expensive side.
No food available in the hotel but Costa coffee a Mac Donald’s plus food in the nearby garage and WH Smith’s. All a few steps away. The staff was friendly. I had a disabled parking space and disabled room on ground floor. Superb
The hotel was clean and quiet. Was the perfect location for visiting Durham University. We were pleasantly surprised for the price, to find tea and coffee making facilities in the room as well as biscuits and bottled water.
Huge, beautiful castle-like hotel. The room was perfect, spacious, stylish, quiet, comfortable and with a great toilet. Also it was very close to the main attractions of the city. I totally recommend it.
Lovely hotel located on the riverside, very close to the city centre. Free use of the health club which was of a really good standard and a well stocked hotel bar. Bed was really comfy too.
Excellent apartment set in such a beautiful location right in the centre of Durham. The apartment itself was clean, modern and full of personal touches. I would definitely stay here again!
A very comfortable single room, and a lovely breakfast. Very convenient location for Durham city centre, but also the surrounding countryside. Would certainly stay here again.
For the price, the hotel is kind of well located: a easily accessible bus that got to city centre of Durham and close to getting out onto A1. Shower is hot and strong.
