Neighbourhood information
Guests love Greatstone for its wide, sandy beach and peaceful, laid-back atmosphere. The beach is the star attraction here—uncrowded and stretching for over two miles, it's perfect for long coastal walks, beach games, picnics, and catching the sunrise. At low tide, the sand seems to go on forever, and it’s a favourite spot for dog walkers, families, and photographers alike.
Nature lovers are drawn to the surrounding dunes and marshlands, which are part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The area is rich in wildlife and makes a great base for birdwatching and gentle exploring. For those with an interest in history, the nearby Dungeness headland offers a surreal, shingle landscape with quirky homes, a historic lighthouse, and the late artist Derek Jarman’s famous Prospect Cottage.
Families particularly enjoy visiting the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway—a charming miniature steam railway that runs right through Greatstone and links to nearby Hythe, Dymchurch, and Romney. It’s a nostalgic and fun way to see the coast.
Nearby New Romney has a good selection of pubs, takeaways, independent shops, and a small but interesting local history museum. A little further afield, Port Lympne Safari Park makes for a great day out with children or animal lovers, and the historic town of Rye—with its cobbled streets, antique shops, and traditional tea rooms—is well worth a visit.
For dining, guests often enjoy traditional fish and chips at local takeaways or cosy pub meals in the surrounding villages. There are also seaside cafés, ice cream huts, and bakeries just a short drive away.
Overall, visitors love Greatstone for its mix of natural beauty, peace and quiet, and easy access to Kent's coastline and attractions.
