Historicaly the cottage dates back to the 13th century. It was built around the same time as Beaumaris Castle . The exterior vertical stone walls are so straight that we are informed only the French stonemasons who built the castle could have built it. They were essentially mathematicians with knowledge of shaping naturally quarried stone for erecting high stone walls. Bwthyn Heddwch translates as a peaceful place. It is unique in structure and built within the original town walls. it was originally The Bulkely Williams Inn. Possibly the only Inn in the small medieval town. The later Bulkely Hotel was built in the high Street in 1832 for the visit of the King and queen and Princess Victoria . You will be staying in the original Bulkeley Inn The old cobbled court yard separates the cottage from the stables where the Ostler lived to look after the horse and cart of the travellers passing through the town long ago. It is in the process of renovation and is a Listed Grade 2 building. The old wooden interior beams and wooden floor boards have been preserved and restored with 'organic orange oil ' ,with an electric AGA in the kitchenette on the ground floor.
The host is an artist with a small studio in the main house next door with her work on view. She offers a grocery service if contacted before arrival with details. There is a cot for babies available if required also a High Chair for toddlers. A washing machine and tumble drier is also available and dishwasher . The host family have sensitively renovated the cottage to retain many of the original features with some antique furniture. We advise that the cottage is modernised to a high standard but with an eclectic mix of old and new. We offer free parking . However it is not suitable for the handicapped or exceptionally obese persons as the staircase is narrow and symbiotically in tune with ancient modes of architecture to suit the smaller body types of medieval times. We invite you to enjoy a slice of its medieval past with all the mod cons of the 21st century. Some knowledge of how to make up an open fire would help as the open fire in the lounge is cosy. We hope you enjoy your holiday of blending the ancient past history with the new. Beaumaris town is known as the Jewel in Crown -the only town in Anglesey that has truly preserved it ancient architecture.
The 14th century Beaumaris castle is close to the cottage . The beach is 4 minutes walk with views across to Snowdonia. Many restaurants and cafes are within a few minutes walk . Beaumaris Pier is 3 minutes walk from the cottage with regular boat trips to Puffin Island. The cottage is accessed via Rating Row On entering the main High Street in Beaumaris turn left by the' Red boat' ice cream shop into Church Street. Drive up Church Street passing the Church on your left. Take the next turn on your right into Rating Row then half way down the street turn right into an unmade up lane which is the entrance to all the garages behind the houses. Bwthyn Heddwch is straight ahead with parking in the space in front. The cottage has an electric AGA for cooking and microwave oven. It has electric radiators in the lounge and bedroom and an open fire in the lounge. Also an electric blanket to heat the supering size bed. There is no Gas appliance in The 'pay as you go key metre' for the electricity is in the entrance hall and can be topped up for extra electricity usage at the SPAR shop only 3 minutes from the cottage . The keys are on top of the white BUOY by the downstairs window .
