By the Brae is hidden down a quiet lane in the Westhill area of Inverness, about 4 miles from the centre of Inverness, 2 miles from Raigmore Hospital, and 8 miles from the airport. (If using What3words to find us, our address is dancer.zoom.gears). This peaceful area, with its beautiful mature trees, high beech hedges, and glimpses of the sea (the Moray Firth) and the hills of the Black Isle beyond, is a haven. We have a very pretty and secluded garden (with several tables and chairs located in sheltered spots) which we encourage our guests to use and enjoy. We offer 3 guest rooms (2 with king size beds and one with a standard double bed), all with en suite shower rooms; we can accommodate a maximum of 6 guests (we're unable to accommodate young children.) The living-dining room is for the sole use of our guests, with comfy sofas, and a warm fire for cold nights. Over the years we’ve collected Scottish artworks by a diverse range of artists – painters, ceramacists, print makers, glass makers - and these works decorate the guest rooms and public areas of By the Brae. We have plenty of safe parking for guest vehicles and safe storage for bicycles.
We've been working in hospitality in Inverness for many years, after we made the decision to leave the city life in London, and we've been living at By the Brae since 2015. We love the Highlands, with its spectacular scenery and rich history, and we make the most of every opportunity to explore the beautiful landscape around us. Richard is a keen motorcyclist and knows the roads of the Highlands very well, and is always happy to advise our guests on particularly scenic routes and our favourite places to visit (especially lesser known gems!). We've done many road trips, in Europe, southern and central Africa, the USA, South America, and New Zealand. We love meeting people and welcoming visitors from all over the world.
By the Brae is situated in a quiet and pretty location on the outskirts of Inverness, 2 miles from Culloden Battlefield, site of the last bloody battle of the Jacobite uprising in 1746. Also nearby are the Bronze Age burial cairns at Clava Cairns (around 4000 years old). The cairns (free to visit), are very well preserved and are in a beautiful woodland setting - well worth visiting. Cawdor Castle with its stunning gardens is 10 miles from us. Fort George, dating from the eighteenth century and described as one of the most outstanding fortifications In Europe, is the same distance. There are 3 championship golf courses near us (Castle Stuart, Nairn Dunbar, and Nairn) as well as many other local courses. Loch Ness is 11 miles, Urquhart Castle is 22 miles. Nairn has a couple of great beaches Also nearby is The Culloden Moor Inn (a great favourite with locals), serving generous and good value meals - situated 2 miles from By the Brae (2 or 3 minutes by car). There's an excellent Indian restaurant, Saffron, also about 2 miles away (about 25 minutes walk if you prefer not to drive). A 10 minute taxi ride into the city centre offers a wide variety of pubs, cafes and restaurants
