I used Tain as a base for a golf holiday in the Highlands.
I used Tain as a base for a golf holiday in the Highlands. Although I did not play Tain Golf Club which is basically next to the hotel, it was convenient for rounds at Brora, Golspie, Royal Dornoch and Fortrose & Rosemarkie, within about a 45 minute drive of all four. Tain itself is a nice village with good restaurants and shopping which I took advantage of when my clubs were not in use. Particularly enjoyed Greens Restaurant within a block of the hotel.

When we travelled north to Thurso, then to Okney, we stopped in Tain at a very nice grocery. After Okney and northern Scotland, we had to head back to Edinburgh. Thurso was too far to drive to Edinburgh, and since we were returning from Orkney by ferry. It was too far to drive down to Inverness. But staying in Tain was just right. We arrived in Edinburgh early in the afternoon, feeling refreshed. The Springfield Guest House, Tain was just down the street from that really good grocery, that is open till 9:00pm.

Tain's location allows ease of access to routes further North (for example to Tongue) or West across to Applecross or South to Inverness. There are lovely beaches close to Tain with good places to eat and drink in the town. It has various supermarkets including Tesco and Lidl and other shops in the town centre.

We came up for the Book Festival. Which was well attended and interesting. the location is beautiful and if we'd had more time would have like to go on the pilgrimage and see the pictish trail and the Glen morangie distilery Tour.

Pretty small town with nice walks along the coast and also along the John o'Groats Trail which can be accessed from Tain. Transport links are pretty good as both trains and buses are options. Good places to eat out e.g. Platform 1864 and the St Duthus Hotel. The town museum and the old church are both worth a visit. The town is full of flowers and hanging baskets and the small rose garden in the High Street is lovely and very well maintained by a team of volunteers.

Tain as a town has limited facilities but makes a great place to use as a base for day's out with very friendly and helpful locals. There are two take-away fish & chip shops, a couple of restaurants and a great conversion of part of Tain rail station to a restaurant/cafe 'Platform 1864' with very helpful staff and excellent food. Also, minutes drive from the Glenmorganie Distillery, a popular venue and worth visiting.
Lovely venue, very obliging and generous staff. Room was great.
Couldn’t have been more helpful. Helped arrange dinner and supplies transport. Well stocked bar showcasing whiskeys of the broader region.
Breakfast was sumptuous.
Staff were quite remarkable/ kept checking in- really understand a service culture.
It would be a pity that a place with such character may not be sustained in the future due to mounting maintenance costs. It’s a great place which deserves clientele who appreciate it, we’ll be back if we can,
This is an excellent place to stay in Tain. Very convenient for the railway station and the town centre. Good places to eat nearby - especially Platform 1864 and the St Duthus Hotel which are both within a 10 minute walk. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was great - everything offered was tasty and good quality. The facilities in the room were wonderful (especially the shower room and the smart TV) - much better than many hotels we've been stayed in.
Exceptionally thought out, beautifully presented. Location, five minutes from Tain but could give Vicki’s horses a scratch on the nose in the morning. So peaceful and quiet. We stay in holiday rentals 2 to 3 months a year all over the world. This is a very, very rare 10 out of 10. And Vicki is not such a bad host either! Though one of the horses did give her a nasty bight. This is a great taste of Highland ‘true local’ without the kilts
Edderton Lodge is about 300' away from Balblair Distillery in the village of Edderton. Perfect if you are doing a tour and tasting and then going to the lodge to stay. Across the lane is all open fields and a Pictish column. 10 minutes away in Tain is a supermarket, the Glenmorangie Distillery, and a few restaurants. Breakfast was limited but tasted great. Dinner is available if you tell them in advance.
Excellant hosts and very welcome stay, lovely bar to relax on a night, lovely room with good facilities and very clean, what I will say is we were there for 1 night with a rather loud customer which resulted in a poor nights sleep, but the owners tried to handle the situation as it was not their fault, also due to covid only able to offer a takeaway menu as the evening dining option,
Ideal location, staff very friendly and approachable and meals served in hotel were great value for money ,delicious and even though restaurant was busy came very quickly. The apartment we had was comfortable , constant hot water and as it was October very cosy. The kitchen had ample facilities to cover every eventuality and beds comfortable.
This was our 7th night in Scotland. We stayed in 6 B and B’s before the Shandwick house and all were nice places. That said, Dennis’ hospitality was bar none. Not just the nicest host we had but quite possibly the nicest person we met the whole trip. Breakfast was phenomenal, room was phenomenal and location was excellent. Book it.
Food was excellent as was the service. Everyone at the hotel goes above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable. All meals are at communal tables. There is no private dining. Common spaces were eclectic but well done. The bedroom decor seems to be 60s / 70s design- a bit unexpected and off.
We really enjoyednstaying in this historic and comfortable establishment. The owners were wonderful as they worked tirelessly to take care of us and manage the business. The hotel has charm and a certain feel that is quite enchanting. We really enjoyed our stay.
The hotel is in the centre of town, it's a lovely old building. There is plenty of parking available. It is clean, comfortable and the owner is very welcoming and friendly. The food is excellent and the bar very well stocked.
Breakfast was excellent as was the dinner we had. We were a little late for the dinner but the Hotel keep restaurant open until we got there. Very impressed with that. The bed was very comfortable.
Breakfast was excellent. Staff went above and beyond to make sure our stay was enjoyable. Quiet location, beautiful old mansion. Highly recommend Mansfield and would certainly stay there again.
The restaurant food was great.
But the breakfast basket was outstanding.
We had one room in the hotel and the cottage.
Warm, clean and comfy beds.
The staff were great.
