Company information

We are a tiny family-run business with just a team of four! We took on the task of rescuing this beautiful old house in 2017 and are lovingly restoring and upgrading as we go along, learning plenty of new skills along the way! It is an absolute labour of love, and all income generated is put straight back into improving the house and grounds. During your stay with us we will do our utmost to make you comfortable and help you enjoy your stay! As such a small team, please be patient with us and with the house and it’s quirks - it’s over 270 years old and as such has a character all of its own. Our core principle is working alongside nature and caring for the environment whilst creating a bespoke flexible destination that allows you to experience the charm and character of Historic Forse house. The principals behind our approach are “keeping it simple, sustainable and affordable”. The Guest House and Cafe features upcycled and re-styled furniture, incorporating a Georgian style with eco-friendly and sustainable pieces. Food for the Guest House and café is locally, sustainable, or free trade sourced with alot of ingredients being home produced in the one acre walled garden and the rest of the grounds. This includes eggs, seasonal vegetables, salad, and fruit. Our aim is to protect, enhance and promote the nature, environment and history associated with Forse and its surrounding area, and so, as the business grows we hope to invest into renewable technology in order to reduce our carbon footprint as well as offering a hub to our local community.

Property information

Forse House is a beautiful Grade B listed Country House situated at the head of a stunning three quarters of a mile wooded driveway. Originally built by Captain John Sutherland in 1753 to replace the family’s crumbling cliff top castle, it remained as a family home up to 1905. After which the house has seen a variety of uses, including a poor house, an infirmary, a care home, and a hotel. The impressive main house has had a number of extensions added over the years but it retains many of the original features; recognised and listed at a B rating are a staircase and three ceilings, two fireplaces and the front door pillars. It is set within 24 acres of landscaped grounds, which include lawns, walled garden, woodland and the picturesque stream which cascades its way alongside the drive down to the Gatehouse on the main road. As well as the house itself, the area around Forse is steeped in history going as far back as prehistoric settlers over 3,000 years ago. Substantial evidence of this time still remains in the large numbers of Brochs, Cairns and standing stones that are scattered across the surrounding Landscape.

Neighbourhood information

Set on the NC500 route, flanked by dramatic coastal cliff and the rugged Morven hills Forse of Nature provides the perfect base for exploring the far north. Steeped in history, the landscape has been occupied for over 7000 years. Visitors can lose themselves in the history at local sites like Camster Cairns, Whaligoe Steps and the multitude of historic harbours found in the area. The nearby flow country is the largest expanse of peat bog in europe and represents one of Scotland’s last true wildnerness areas.
