The whole accommodation was excellent and the views were fantastic. Handy to walk down to the pub and the fish restaurant instead of driving elsewhere to eat after a 6hour drive.

With wonderful views overlooking Gourdon Harbour to one side and the open ocean to the other, Gowan Bank offers well-appointed comfortable accommodation with a twin room (two singles) and a double room (with either a king size bed or two singles - the bed splits into two if needed), travel cot, newly refurbished kitchen and relaxing lounge with a large sofabed (king size, when opened). In the kitchen there is everything you need to cook a meal, if you are not taking advantage of the two restaurants opposite the flat. The dining table overlooks the sea. Comfortable sofas are arranged around a real fire, and coal is provided. Gowan Bank has a small 'sun trap' deck behind the property, a large book exchange and speedy wifi along with a television and DVD player, a coffee machine and a dining table with an amazing view out to sea. The owner has supplied maps and local information and knows the local area well. Gourdon is situated between Aberdeen and Dundee on the North East Coast of Scotland. Around the local area are walks, fishing, mountain biking, bird watching, skiing, castles, wonderful beaches, great places to eat, villages to explore, swimming pools within 10 miles in each direction and museums, historical fishing villages and larger towns. Gowan Bank has been welcoming guests for 7.5 years and has had consistently good reviews. It's a real 'home from home' and a longer stay not only gives you a discounted rate, but allows you enough time to really appreciate this wonderful area. Last year - 2023 - guests saw dolphins and whales from the windows. The village is peaceful and safe and whatever the season, Gowan Bank is warm and comfortable.
I have lived in the area for 16 years so I know the area well and I'm on hand to answer any questions you may have. I'm a teacher and a writer and am very keen for Gowan Bank to be used as a writers' or artists' retreat as well as a holiday venue as it is an inspiring place to be, with peace and amazing views... I am an active and outgoing person so happy to answer any questions about local activities, or just about where to relax and eat. I'll always strive to meet guests when they arrive or soon after they arrive. I keep chickens, I read a lot, I write stories and I daydream a lot when I'm not writing or gardening. I live only a few miles away so I'm on hand if need be. I have travelled widely myself so I know exactly what you need to be comfortable and I've worked hard so that Gowan Bank is the most relaxing place to stay. Guests come back again and again once they've enjoyed a stay at the apartment. I'm happy to give local recommendations so you make the most of your stay. Each year I work hard to improve the accommodation and I always ask guests what would improve their stay and, if I can, add it! I promise you will find Gowan Bank spotlessly clean and if anything is not to your satisfaction I'll work on it immediately.
Aberdeen and Dundee (both an hour by bus, 45 mins by car) offer cinemas, good shopping, larger museums such as Discovery Quay which contains Captain Scott's RSS Discovery, and all the amenities of the city, with good transport links in both directions. Both cities have airports and car hire availabilty. Gourdon itself is a small fishing village with a working harbour and has a shop, fish and chip restaurant, the lovely Harbour Bar (directly opposite), local fish shops on the harbour itself, coastal walks in either direction, playparks and a tennis court, that locals are in the process of renovating. One mile away in Inverbervie there are further cafes, restaurants and shops, a reliable local taxi firm, Bervie Cabs, and a small supermarket. Gowan Bank would make an ideal Writers' or Artists' retreat or a great place to use as a base to explore the surrounding area. Just a few of the local attractions.... Stonehaven, 10 miles to the north has the only heated outdoor swimming pool in Scotland and the amazing Fireballs Ceremony at New Year, plus the Tollbooth Museum and Dunottar Castle, one of the most breath taking castles in Scotland. Arbroath and Montrose are well worth a visit too, as well as the numerous small villages with their quirky shops and cafes. Buses run regularly from close to the flat if you don't want to drive and there are good and well-priced taxi firms nearby. A longer drive takes you to Royal Deeside and the Cairngorms National Park, both easy to visit as day trips. Culturally there is lots to learn, famous local author Lewis Grassic Gibbon wrote about the area, JM Barrie is from nearby Kirriemuir. Gowan Bank is a great stop-off between the North and South of Scotland, and provides a great base for exploring the area. The new alternative to the NC500, the NE500 is being publicised this year and Gowan Bank is a short detour off the main route. Whether you want to watch the waves, stroll around the harbour or explore, Gowan Bank is perfect for you!
