Located on the meandering River Coquet, Rothbury is built from mellow sandstone and home to a vibrant high street with a variety of independent shops, including a good delicatessen, butcher and baker. Nearby Morpeth also has a wide variety of shops, cafés and restaurants and is an excellent gateway to the region, lying on the fast train line between London and Edinburgh. History enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them occupied in the area, such as the National Trust properties of Wallington Hall and Cragside, the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. This marvel of the Victorian Gothic Revival, surrounded by beautiful gardens and mature trees, showcases the innovative spirit of Lord Armstrong and is the perfect spot for a day trip.
