This quirky, unique historic building is really one of a kind providing split level studio style accommodation (sleeping, dining and lounging upstairs, kitchenette and wet room bathroom downstairs). In the mid 1800's it was a handwriting school for local children but now it's been lovingly revived to offer a spacious and tranquil place for you to relax and recharge. It's in a central town location with bike storage space, 2 miles from a beach and minutes walk from local amenities. It’s the perfect base for walkers and explorers. It’s surrounded by glorious countryside and fantastic coastal walks, it’s also a great excursion location. The School Room is part of the main house (The Old School House) with its own entrance through the garage. It offers a spacious living, dining and sleeping area on the first floor in a studio style, with great views from its huge windows of the old part of Helston and the countryside beyond. There is no TV but there is WiFi access, so you can snuggle up on the huge sofa and watch something on your own device, or have a peaceful time reading, drawing ….. dreaming! Downstairs there's a basic kitchenette with microwave, toaster, kettle, fridge and a small slate floored wet room shower with sink and toilet facilities. NOTE: The downstairs area is slightly below ground so in the winter months guests will find this area significantly cooler to the upstairs main space. If you're tall you may need to duck on the ground floor as the ceiling height is around 5ft 11” but the School Room main living area is light with lofty ceilings. The stairs from the kitchen to the main living area are wooden and open backed and care should be taken especially on the way down.
I feel very fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of the world and love creating spaces that bring some magic into people’s lives. Hosting means I can bring these two things together and spread a little of this magic to others! I also run a holistic practice from my home working with a blend of holistic counselling and energy healing if you're interested in this while you're here. I live on site so if there is anything you need, or any information you could do with during your stay, I'd be happy to help.
A FLAVOUR OF THE LOCAL AREA .......... Helston has a number of interesting old buildings dating mainly from the 18th century and if you pick up a heritage trail map from the museum, this lists key sites around the town. The museum is definitely worth a visit if you want to find out about the history of the local area. There are beautiful walks in easy reach of the School Room and one of my favourites is the Penrose Estate (5 mins from your door), a magical place in nature. Helston has shops, pubs and restaurants and The Blue Anchor pub needs a special mention! It's a must for real ale enthusiasts, as it brews its own (Spingo) on the premises. My favourite cafe and restaurant is CAST (arts & cultural centre), their simple, tasty menu of wholesome, good food is always a treat, they also have an events programme that's worth keeping an eye on. The boating lake at the bottom of the hill has a cafe too and is a lovely place to go for breakfast or to sit and have an ice cream while watching the ducks, geese and swans, you can even hire a bike there in season. If you want to explore further afield, Porthleven, with it's beautiful harbour, beach and many eateries and galleries is always a great place to have a wander.
