FAQs about hotels in Canterbury

Heavenly Heritage and Literary Legend

Canterbury’s religious and historic significance has inspired literary greatness. Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ were based on pilgrimages to the bygone shrine of Thomas A Becket, who was murdered here. The Marlowe Theatre is named after the 16th-century playwright born here, and the Canterbury Museum has an exhibit on Rupert Bear, whose author lived in this River Stour city.

River cruises and punting provide fantastic views of the striking weavers’ houses right on the water, and of Westgate - the UK’s largest city gate. Other sections of the city walls remain, and there are also ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, named after the 6th-century saint who brought Christianity to England. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, but the modern-day seat is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral, dating to the 12th century.

From the same period are the Norman castle ruins, occupying the site of a wooden fort constructed by William the Conqueror. The mound they sit on in Dane John Gardens is thought to be a Roman cemetery, and an original mosaic is visible in the Roman Museum.

In the Buttermarket half-timbered houses and historic inns are interspersed with shops, and big name brands line the Whitefriars Shopping Centre. The Canterbury accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap hostels and city centre B&Bs.

Canterbury is a lovely old historical partly walled City, it has a beautiful Cathedral and a castle well worth visiting. The high st is a mixture of modern and quaint old shops, the older buildings/architecture is lovely to see. Great variety of cafes/restaurants/pubs to visit . We visited the Olive Grove for dinner on the first night great food , very friendly staff, good atmosphere! Guided walks available throughout the day & evening . Two days was not enough to see & do all we wanted, Will definitely be back again soon.

Wonderful Cathedral and precinct which now allows dogs inside. Parking in the city was expensive. We had a blue badge but it needs to be registered Mon-Fri to apply for free parking which I wasn’t aware of till too late.

Canterbury was lovely but the lack of phone signal everywhere was just crippling. It’s not good enough when you’re trying to navigate and look up reviews of cafes and bars and restaurants, or contact people. Third world city. We were thinking about moving to the city centre but absolutely no chance when you lose signal outside of wi-fi range. And no, I don’t want to have to sign into shops and cafes wi-fi all the time. Rant over. I’m on Vodafone - maybe others do better but from those I spoke to, I think not.

Absolutely lovely, people very friendly, so much history.

Absolutely lovely, people very friendly, so much history. The kings golden mile fabulous, and the little bar so quaint The Thomas Tallis ale house wonderful gentleman (owner) so helpful with great ideas what to see and even the train schedule back to london. This pub was so comfy and welcoming it was hard to continue on our journey, could have spend the entire evening there. Canterbury cathederal a must see no question there. Also walk along the water with such beautiful gardens can’t miss it just to the right of the stone arch into the city. Also the crooked house now a book shop, take time to look around some exceptional books. Our hotel was exceptional, great choices for lunch and dinner. It would be a shame if you didn’t spend at least one full day and night in the quaint village. So much to do and see so little time!

Canterbury was very nice and the hotel was a short walk from the city centre. There was one problem that I encountered in the city and that was the amount of people rough sleeping, it seemed that it is quite a serious problem in Canterbury.

The hotel was beautiful and quaint. It was perfectly located for exploring Canterbury. Our room was nice and spacious with a good view and a comfortable bed. The breakfast provided the next day was varied and generous in quantity. I especially want to thank Monica who oversaw our stay. After informing her that we were recently engaged, she went the extra mile in arranging romantic touches for the room, providing recommendations for exploring the area, and generally making us feel very welcome and relaxed. Thank you so much, Monica!

The staff were very kind through out. Rossiera and Gary (don't know if I have the first name right) - in particular amongst hotel staff was very polite and helpful with any queries including providing information about Canterbury and areas to visit and requests during stay. So thank you for that. The little things that mattered - free coffee/ hot chocolate/ tea in the room, the soap smelled nice, the bed was comfortable, the shower was refreshing and the wifi was good enough to have a video call comfortably. Thanks for a fun time!

The location could hardly be better for visiting Canterbury. It is only a ten-minute walk to the city centre. Another big positive is that there is ample parking for anyone arriving by car. The building is a beautiful 14th century timber-frame construction, that is now a restaurant on the ground floor with hotel accommodation above, entered by a separate door so that guests don't have to walk through the dining area to get to bedrooms. There is no breakfast service, but there are plenty of cafes nearby.

I and 5 colleagues were visiting Canterbury as we were working on a project in the area. The location of the property is great, as it is not only a short 5 minute walk from the City Centre, but we were able to park our vans directly outside the property, which is a quiet road and it made it very convenient for us. The house is very homely and was in excellent condition. It has all the amenities and facilities you need to cater for yourself. Will definitely be back when working in the area again.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by the very pleasant and friendly owner Stuart who showed us to our rooms and offered advice on nearby attractions. The breakfast was amazing one of the best I had ever had I must add as I am a bit of a foodie. Great location, roughly a 7min drive to Canterbury Town centre. My daughter enjoyed the surrounding woodland with resident wild pigs which gave the setting a back to nature ambience. Would definitely recommend and visit again if in the area.

Hotel had a great location. I appreciated that Reception showed me a delightful way to walk into the center of Canterbury through gardens and alongside the river and it was one of the prettiest parts of the city and very restful. Also there was a pleasant garden at the back of the hotel. Dining staff were very friendly and helpful as was Reception.

Location for visiting cathedral and city centre very good but I chose this hotel because advertised parking . Not only was access a nightmare involving very small streets , the car park was full and we then had to reverse up the same streets. Best to park elsewhere at considerable expense and walk. Good breakfast and pleasant staff.
