Jonathan and Sade
Jonathan and Sade warmly welcome you to our fully licensed boutique Torquay guest house - Kethla House! Kethla House is an attractive Victorian town house, providing Four Star quality guest accommodation in the beautiful seaside resort of Torquay in South Devon. Since taking on the business in 2022, we have substantially renovated all the guest rooms. Whether you are looking for a romantic weekend, a family holiday or a short break we can offer you a warm welcome, luxuriously-appointed en-suite rooms, an extensive breakfast menu and customer service that is second to none, all at competitive prices year round, and just minutes from the beach, seafront and local shops and restaurants. We are also just a short walk from the Riviera Conference Centre, historic twelfth-century Torre Abbey and the Princess Theatre. Torquay is also the perfect base from which to explore the English Riviera, the beautiful South Devon Coast and the stunning scenery of Dartmoor National Park. It is also within easy reach of numerous National Trust and English Heritage properties, the historic cathedral city of Exeter and the thriving maritime city of Plymouth. Since moving to Torbay in 2017 we have fallen in love with this beautiful and varied region, with its stunning scenery, rolling hills, benign climate and fascinating history, and feel privileged to be raising our young family in this renowned holiday destiny. As your hosts we would be delighted to introduce you to this beautiful part of the world.
Our first experience of Torbay was in the Spring of 2016 when driving around South Devon on the lookout for somewhere to settle and bring up a young family. Driving along Torquay seafront on a beautiful spring afternoon, and then back along the stunning coast road from Dartmouth we both fell in love with South Devon, finally moving to Paignton in the winter of 2017. We took over Kethla house in March 2022 from the wonderful previous owners, Don and Julie. Although neither of us have had prior experience in the hospitality industry we have always loved entertaining guests and have thrown ourselves into making Kethla House a luxurious home from home for our guests. Our mission is to ensure that all our guests have a relaxing and enjoyable stay with us, and especially for all those new to the English Riviera and to South Devon to experience the same love at first sight and happy memories that we did when we first came here. Sade's first career was as an engineer in the oil and gas industry. Sade is hands-on and practical - she has always been passionate about buildings and about interior design. Since taking on Kethla House Sade is responsible for updating the furnishings and décor, and she does most of the maintenance and decorating. Sade has an outgoing, bubbly, personality, loves welcoming our guests, making them laugh and making sure that they have everything they need for their stay. Sade loves dancing, travelling, gardening and entertaining... Jonathan was born in Dover in Kent. Previously a university lecturer, when he married Sade he moved to Nigeria (via a brief sojourn in Saudi Arabia), where he spent his time setting up a business providing editing and consultancy services to academics and researchers around the world. At Kethla House, he helps check in guests, cooks the breakfasts and deals with most of the administration. Beyond the guest house, he loves travelling, playing with our children, art, ballet and cricket.
Belgrave Road is a lovely road with lovely Victorian buildings and Kethla House is Just a 10 minute stroll to the beach and harbour area where you can catch a ferry over to Brixham or just relax at one of the many bars and restaurants there. Princess Theatre - South Devon’s largest regional theatre, showcasing the best West End and touring productions from across the UK. The theatre offers a wide and varied programme all year round, including first class comedy, musicals, dance, music and children’s shows. The Princess Theatre is less than ten minute's walk from Kethla House. Torre Abbey - dating from the 12th century, with beautiful gardens and a rolling programme of art displays and cultural events - is just 5 minutes' walk from Kethla House. Paignton Zoo is one of the South West's most exciting visitor attractions with over 2,000 animals across 80 acres. Just 10 minutes from us by car Cockington Village - Many villages lay claim to being "picturesque", but the village of Cockington is the real deal. Take a walk back in time along Cockington's narrow lanes, lined with thatched houses with their colour washed walls of stone and cobb, You'll experience a quiet charm that is a quintessentially English with its manor house, cricket ground, thatched pub, cream teas and craft shops. Kents Cavern - One of the most important Stone Age cave sites in Europe, making it Britain's premier prehistoric cave. For thousands of years the cave was home to ancient humans, sheltering from extreme weather, making fires, shaping stone tools and hunting wild Ice Age predators. You will be taken back to the ancient times. Dartmouth Steam Railway steam trains travel along the South Devon coast and into the Dart Valley to the beautiful village of Kingswear which sits opposite the pretty Port of Dartmouth. Dartmouth River Boats operate on the River Dart offering scheduled services on selected dates to the historic town of Totnes (nine miles upriver) as well as daily river cruises.
