Lamphey Park was built as a genteel residence ~ 1780 and was 'modernised' in 1814. It later becoming a farm, before falling into disrepair and being abandoned after the second world war. It was restored in the 90's and was subsequently bought by Jane and Jon in 2003 and converted into a small guest house. Most of the house interior was lost and much of what remains reflects its history. However, the restoration added many unusual features including maplewood floors reclaimed from a local ballroom and cast iron radiators reclaimed from a local airfield and a reconstructed dog wheel in the kitchen. It has been furnished with a mixture or antique and modern furniture and Persian rugs to give it a warm and welcoming feeling. The house has a large garden and five acres of paddocks. The old walled garden which was also abandoned and derelict is being restored as working commercial garden. The outbuildings have been converted and some of these are now used to provide self-catering accommodation. We live in the house and welcome our guests and manage the business personally.
Jon was born and brought up in Pembrokeshire, but like many of his compatriots left home after university. He worked for many years in the IT industry before coming a freelance consultant, mainly working overseas in Europe, near-east and former Soviet Union. Jane was born and brought up in Oxfordshire and was working as a midwife in the John Ratcliffe hospital when we met in Oxford. We returned to Pembrokeshire when we bought Lamphey Park in 2003 developing the B&B business and converting the outbuildings. The units which are used for self-catering accommodation were designed and built by ourselves, specifically to provide holiday accommodation.
Lamphey Park is an ideal centre for enjoying a Pembrokeshire holiday. There is something for everyone within a five mile radius. Some of the finest beaches in Britain are a short drive away: unspoilt, soft sand, safe for swimming, perfect for mum and dad and children alike. Pembroke, Carew and Manorbier castles are all within a three mile radius giving fascinating insights into medieval life and history. The magnificent St David's cathedral is an hour's drive away and one of the bishop's medieval palaces is in Lamphey village. The charming resort town of Tenby is five miles away. If you want a fun day out, or if the weather is bad, one can always visit Folly Farm, the finest animal attraction in Wales, the theme park at Oakwood or the Blue Lagoon adventure Pool. Or, if you want to, you can simply relax at Lamphey Park.
