This peaceful property is located in the centre of Altnaharra, a 5 minute walk to the local hotel and pub. The former school building was carefully renovated in 2020 to provide a modern spacious two bedroomed property with underfloor heating and log burner if required, free Superfast fibre broadband (50Mbps) and a smart Tv, which provides a cosy home from home environment with fantastic views and a spacious garden. Guests can engage in local activities such as fishing, golfing, walking and cycling.
The hosts live in the area and are available to provide assistance or information about the area and surrounding attractions during your stay.
Altnaharra is a quiet Hamlet in the centre of Sutherland. The Hamlet (A settlement usually smaller than a village) consists of a seasonal hotel and public bar, a church and several private properties. Altnaharra is famous for holding the joint record as the coldest place in Britain at minus 27.2 deg celsius, and regularly gets a mention for its temperature extremes. It is situated between the larger villages of Tongue, on the North Coast 500 route , and Lairg to the south, where you can access the east and west coasts of Sutherland. You will be based right in the heart of Sutherland, the perfect location to climb the most northerly Munro's of Ben Klibreck and Ben Hope or the smaller Corbetts of Ben Hee and Ben Loyal, also known as the queen of Scottish mountains, or simply just enjoy the spectacular scenery they provide. Stunning views of these mountains and various freshwater lochs are on the doorstep along with wildlife such as red deer, ospreys and golden eagles. You can also view the atlantic salmon leaping at the falls of Shin near Lairg. There are plenty of clean, glorious beaches & bays to explore all along the surrounding coasts. Famous links golf courses such as Dornoch, Golspie and Tain along with the less well known but unique 9 hole courses of Bonar Bridge and Durness, are all within an hours drive away. Durness is also the location of the spectacular Smoo Cave , a large sea cave, and nearby a thrilling zipline experience over one of the most beautiful beaches in the highlands. To the southeast, Dunrobin Castle with its falconry displays and famous garden and the whisky distilleries of Glenmorangie and Balblair with tours and tasting are less than an hours drive away. Altnaharra is also a starting point of the Strathnaver Trail, which incorporates remains of settlements from the highland clearances, iron age brochs and other monuments, the Trail finishes in the village of Bettyhill with a museum telling the story of the people that once lived here.
