Great host. It's s newly built pods like a little studio with mini kitchen, toilet and shower. It was great experience with BBQ grill outside the pod. It's a nice quiet holiday about 2hrs from st. Ives. We enjoyed the stay a different experience,...

Property information

Pewson Barton glamping is a "wild glamping" site at Pewson Barton farm, an historic landholding unchanged since it was recorded in the Domesday Book in 1088. We have five luxury en suite glamping pods sleeping four (max 3 adults) with views of the northern range of Dartmoor. Each pod has a glass-walled sitting room with two chairs, coffee table and sofa, which converts at night into the main bedroom with a fold-down bed. Behind the sitting/bedroom on one side is a storage area and a galley bedroom with a bunkbed (lower bunk suitable for an adult, upper bunk only for a child); on the other side is a kitchenette and a bathroom with toilet, shower and sink. Generous steps outside the pods and external lighting enable guests to sit outside and enjoy the view. The pods have mains water and 240V AC electricity (and each pod has two outside electrical sockets). Each kitchenette is equipped with a kettle, toaster, mini-fridge and microwave, enabling guests to prepare hot drinks, snacks and ready meals. Each pod also has an outside table and a "viking" campfire (firepit and grill suspended from a cast-iron tripod), where guests can cook meals and enjoy fireside camping life, weather permitting! IMPORTANT: - The pods are sited in a field which is part of a working farm. There are livestock in the adjoining fields and therefore pets and items such as fireworks and Chinese lanterns are not permitted. - Parking is off-road, on the grass of the field. Parking is restricted to an area behind the pods and cars are not permitted to pass between or in front of the pods. - The pods are luxurious but you are still camping in a field! In particular, the grass in the field is managed for agricultural and ecological value: it is not kept mown short. Guests should expect to encounter insects and heavy dew in the morning and after dusk! We recommend you wear long trousers and waterproof footwear (e.g. wellington boots) in the field. You may also wish to bring insect repellent!

Neighbourhood information

Dolton and Dowland and the surrounding parished were recorded in the Domesday book but, in keeping with their atmosphere of deep unchanging calm between the lanes, did not do much of note for a thousand years! The areas profile in the 20th century was raised when the landscape inspired several literary and artistic figures: Ted Hughes the poet laureate, who lived at Moortown Farm with his second wife and her family and wrote his Moortown Diaries collection there; Michael Morpurgo the children's laureate, who married Clare Lane, the daugher of the founder of Penguin books, and moved to Nethercott House in Iddesleigh; and James Ravilious, the documentary photographer and son of the artist Eric Ravilious, who married in the local squire's family and lived in Dolton. All three drew extensive inspiration from the area - Michael Morpurgo set his book War Horse in Iddesleigh, later turned into a play and then a film - and even collaborated on one publication ("All Around the Year", a record of a year in the life of our cousins' farm, now War Horse Valley Farm).
