The only positive thing you can say about Castle Douglas is that it is a convenient place from which you can travel and explore Dumfries and Galloway.
I spent one day watching the red kites feeding at Bellymack Hill Farm, and the day I left I took the opportunity to travel to the Mull of Galloway because I was relatively close to it.
Don't plan to stay in Castle Douglas in order to explore the town itself, there is nothing to see.

A lovely little town with plenty of shops which appealed to the wife. The natives were friendly and we enjoyed the banter. For the fellows don't miss the brewery at the bottom of town, Great tap, some great beers. Came home within lots of meat from each of the butchers shops.

Castle Douglas is a favourite place where we spend some time on any trip which demands a stop off to take advantage of the independent retail stores. We know staff are friendly and cheerful, don't hassle customers and always give a warm welcome.
After some shopping there is quite a number of places to stop for coffee and cake or even a more substantial meal.

Threave Gardens were lovely.
Threave Gardens were lovely. We spent about 3 hours there and went round the house. Very interesting. Lots of lovely restaurants in Castle Douglas. The King's Arms and Carlos Italian were very good

bye far Mr pooks restraunt a genius with food went 4 times 6 days the food is out of this world staff are fantastic too castle douglas is such a lovely place with friendly people lovely little shops selling unusual items it is central for lots of other places 😀
Warm welcome by owner who allows dogs. Personal service you often dont get with the big hotel chains. If you are visiting Castle Douglas this is a lovely place to stay. Converted stately home that is relaxed and informal and a great little hideaway. Extensive grounds with daffodils and views of surrounding countryside while you dine. Meals are excellent value for money and cooked to your liking. The dining room on an evening has a cosy ambience with soft lighting, leather sofas, a fire and a bar.
This was a lovely, well equipped little house. It had a microwave/grill, air fryer, toaster, kettle and fridge. Plenty for a weekend trip. The layout was great with the bedroom upstairs and location was great being 10mins away from castle Douglas. Bathroom area was a perfect size too! We loved the hot tub being included. Beautiful views as soon as you look out the windows. The local pub needs to be visited, staff were lovely and so was the food. Well worth the money.
The location in the farmland was beautiful. Walks in the green fields with many sheep and cows. The accommodation was comfortable, good bed, quiet, sunny sitting room looking out over the hills. Walks on the coast are easily accessible and there are a number of good restaurants in Castle Douglas. We appreciated the hospitality of Irene, who was taking care of the guests.
everything was very new and very comfortable. all the rooms were large and everything worked well. It would be a great place for a family to stay. Also the location is excellent - there are lots of hare, deer and birds around the property. Castle Douglas with lots of independent shops is only 2 miles away. We would definitely want to return to the cottage and the area.
Tucked away in such a quiet peaceful area 8 minutes drive from Castle Douglas - the property is exceptionally clean and tidy and it has everything you could possibly need. The “welcome box” was such a great surprise and was very much enjoyed. The host could not be more accommodating - nothing is too much trouble. Great stay, great weekend, most definitely be back soon :)
Super clean, extremely comfortable, very well equipped. Everything you could possibly need as well as lovely welcome pack. Also very good location for both Castle Douglas and the wider amenities - Threave Gardens so close, also Kirkcudbright (was there for the Arts and Crafts Trail - excellent) also Culzean Castle and Dumfries House in good striking distance.
- the staff were fantastic and obviously care about the community and visitors. locals in the pubs below were great people to talk to as well. breakfast was accommodating and delicious. we all really enjoyed our time in Castle Douglas. Rooms aren’t exactly modern, but I don’t think that should be a problem for anyone, accommodations are more than adequate.
Stunning location on the edge of Galloway Forest Park, with incredible wildlife to be seen just in the garden (countless birds, rabbits, even a fox!). Great base for exploring the surrounding hills, coastline and towns. Rachael and Matt were super friendly and gave us a little tour of the area around the house when we arrived. Would love to go back!
As soon as we arrived we were given a warm welcome at reception. The room was immaculate with stunning views of the Loch. Bed was comfortable. Ate in the restaurant both nights and the food and hospitality were first class. This hotel should be very proud of its staff as they give 100% at all times.
We enjoyed a lovely stay at Inn on the Loch recently, and appreciated the well-appointed room in the separate accommodation block. The inn is very relaxed and in a wonderful location on the water. Breakfast was very good, and served in the relaxed dining area. Thankyou.
We had a wonderful welcome from Gillian and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in her spacious, comfortable, all-amenities flat. Location was also perfect for everything the town had to offer, especially Gillian's InHouse cafe and chocolate factory downstairs.
A great place to stay in the centre of Castle Douglas. Really friendly and helpful staff, lovely food and a good selection of drinks.
We had a nice comfortable room that was very clean and a little larger than many standard hotel rooms which was a bonus.
Friendly, helpful owner. Well maintained, nice room and en-suite. Breakfast room was lovely, excellent breakfast. Although I know the area quite well, this was my first stay in Castle Douglas which I really enjoyed.
Exceptionally clean and warm accommodation, with very welcoming hosts. lovely wee finishing touches in the room and a great breakfast. we will definitely book again next time in Castle Douglas.
Good breakfast, location poor. Advertised as Castle Douglas and it isn't it is in Crossmichael which was disappointing as we specifically wanted to stay in Castle Douglas.
