I have lived and worked in the village of Helmsdale all of my adult life. My aim is to provide a pleasant atmosphere at Selkie House where my visitors can relax and enjoy a well earned break. Pretty hand painted furniture , good quality bedding supplied by Morris & Co and Sandersons combined with feather pillows and new mattresses help to ensure this. Soft music at breakfast and a busy bird feeder outside the window help to provide this. Guests are invited to make use of the seating at the front of house overlooking the harbour and out to sea. They can also enjoy a glass of wine if needed. I like to start the day with a hearty breakfast which will last my visitors for a good while before they need to replenish. I find the village to be a delightful place to live and I am happy to confidently recommend its highlights to visitors from further afield. Helmsdale is located in a natural bay with a very secure harbour protecting a wide variety of fishing boats and pleasure cruise. Dolphins seals whales and a host of rare seabirds can be seen from the coastal walk which passes the front door, otters hunt the foreshore. Breakfast will be served from 6.30 am for visitor and I wish to impress that I cannot accept reservations from anyone under the age of 18 years. However children are more than welcome if accompanied by an adult. In house evening meals can be served by separate arrangements if desired.
Helmsdale is ideally located to give access to visit Caithness including Berridale, Lybster Dunbeath and Wick to the North and Brora Gospie Dornoch and Inverness to the south. There is usually a good choice of eating places to explore and enjoy. La Mirage restaurant and Thyme and Place restaurant all on the main Street, along with Bannockburn Inn and Belgrave Hotel, choice from the menu, Timespan the local heritage center is well worth a visit. this is superb walking and cycling area, taking in beautiful scenery both on the coast and inland river views, public transport includes bus and train services to visit Dunrobin Castle, Brora Heritage Centre, Dunbeath and Lybster. Many walks including the local countryside and coastal tracks available These are a haven for wildlife and rare birds, pollution-free, clean air. Well behaved dogs welcome. Helmsdale is a well serviced little village with local amenities all in place, Free church, Church of Scotland, health center, community center and dentist.
