The interior is tastefully decorated with locally inspired touches, including Harris Tweed curtains and artwork reflecting the area's rich Harris Tweed heritage. The living room is the perfect place to unwind, with the option of a cosy multi-fuel burning stove or central heating to keep you warm throughout your stay. The kitchen is equipped with modern amenities, including an induction hob and cooker, ideal for preparing meals with fresh, locally sourced produce. For your convenience, the cottage offers ample parking for 3-4 cars, ensuring you have plenty of space for your vehicles. Whether you're exploring the nearby historical sites, enjoying a family dinner, or simply relaxing in a peaceful setting, this property provides the perfect base for your island getaway. From 1st April till 30th September, Taigh Toorum offers an optional breakfast service upon request, where you can enjoy a delicious, locally sourced breakfast prepared for you, just ask about availability. The rest of the year the cottage operates on a self catering basis.
The cottage belongs to retired sea Captain Murdo M. Macleod, a man with deep family roots in the area. During his long maritime career, Captain Murdo held command of the renowned luxury cruise ship M.V. Hebridean Princess, so he understands the importance of quality service. This is reflected in the cottage which you will find shipshape in all respects. Captain Macleod’s family have called the Isle of Lewis home for generations. His intimate connection to the local culture and landscape is reflected not only in his rich heritage but also in the carefully curated touches around the cottages. A true Highlander at heart, Captain Macleod is an accomplished bagpiper, and you’ll find subtle musical nods to this in the décor of the property. A keen hiker and amateur fisherman, he has spent much of his life exploring the stunning terrain of the islands. From April to September, Captain Macleod is available to be booked for guided walking tours, fishing trips, and bagpipe talks and demonstrations, sharing his passion and insights with our guests. Whether you’re looking to hike the local trails, fish in nearby lochs, or enjoy an authentic cultural musical experience with the bagpipes, you can book his services. Just ask.
Set in a tranquil rural environment, the property offers expansive views of the historic Broch to the north and the majestic mountains of Harris to the south. Surrounded by natural beauty, this peaceful location is a haven for those looking to relax and immerse themselves in the stunning landscapes. The area is renowned for its wildlife, and it’s not uncommon to spot golden eagles and other birds of prey soaring from the house. Whether you’re enjoying a quiet moment on the property or exploring the surrounding trails, the sights and sounds of nature are never far away. For outdoor enthusiasts, the region offers numerous hiking trails, archaeological sites, scenic vistas, and opportunities for fishing. Fresh, locally sourced produce is available nearby, so you can enjoy the best of the island’s natural bounty during your stay. For your convenience, there’s a well-stocked community shop just half a mile away, where you can pick up essentials and local delicacies. Whether you’re relaxing at the cottage, exploring the local area, or enjoying fresh island fare, the neighbourhood offers the perfect blend of tranquility and accessibility.
