The surrounding area features several lovely historic sites, walks and traditional market towns. Located on the meandering River Coquet, Rothbury is built from mellow sandstone and home to a vibrant high street with a variety of independent shops, including a good delicatessen, butcher and baker. Nearby Morpeth also has a wide variety of shops, cafés and restaurants and is an excellent gateway to the region, lying on the fast train line between London and Edinburgh. History enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them occupied in the area, such as the National Trust properties of Wallington Hall and Cragside, the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. This marvel of the Victorian Gothic Revival, surrounded by beautiful gardens and mature trees, showcases the innovative spirit of Lord Armstrong and is the perfect spot for a day trip. The landscape is also sure to delight wildlife-spotters and walkers. The Simonside Hills, the Cheviot Hills, the Northumberland National Park, Kielder Water and Hadrian’s Wall are all within easy reach, providing ample opportunities for hiking and cycling. FISHING ON SITE There is a fishing permit for one rod for guests at The Granary at Rothley East Shield. Guests must bring their own equipment and are welcome to fly fish on Rothley Low Lake, close by the cottage. Please inform Crabtree & Crabtree at the time of booking if you'd like to fish during your holiday. FARM TOURS Farm tours can be arranged on request - subject to owner availability and at additional cost depending on guest requirements.
