Sarah Callander Beckett, known as SCB, inherited the estate and returned to take responsibility for Combermere in 1992. Following a Marketing and PR career in the Far East and USA focusing on fashion, interiors and hotels, she has translated that experience into the creation of Combermere today - respectful of its past and its history, but to make it fit for purpose in the 21st century. She is passionately committed to its renaissance and the restoration of its buildings and land. She is very proud of the team she leads and their shared energy and enthusiasm for its success. Married to Peter, and Mum to Peregrine her work keeps her very busy. She enjoys languages, travelling and connecting her friends.

Property information

Combermere Abbey, one of Cheshire's pre-eminent historic houses, began as a cistercian monastery founded in 1133 by Hugh de Malbanc, Lord of Nantwich. It sits overlooking a 143 acre lake (mere) and gentle rolling parkland filled with ancient oaks on the Cheshire/Shropshire border. Home to only two families since the Dissolution in 1538, the Cottons and the Crossleys, it became a Tudor manor house in 1538 and later a Gothic country house in 1820. Many famous visitors have stayed and fallen in love with it – Elizabeth, Empress of Austria, William of Orange, Henry 1V, Queen Paola of Belgium and Samuel Johnson. The spectacular North Wing with interiors by acclaimed designer Nina Campbell has recently been completely restored after years of decay and near dereliction winning numerous awards for the renovation. Elegant, luxurious and beautifully furnished with a dedicated butler, guests have a choice of two beautiful suites - The Salamanca and Bhurtpore and enjoy the chance to become their own ‘Lord and Lady of the Manor’ during their stay! Enjoy the private garden and spectacular views across the mere and indulge in the estate walks through ancient woods.
