We arrived on a wet and windy day to a warm welcome from Sue. The full day in our two night stay saw heavy rain and fierce winds - there was road and rail disruption across the South East. We opted to hunker down for a relaxing day in and the...

Conveniently placed on the A259, we are easy to find and only a five minute walk from Rye Town Centre. An historic house, on The Quay, near central Rye, The Old Laundry is almost 200 years old - formerly a Customs House and then The Rye Hygienic Laundry. We offer a huge, fully equipped, comfortable apartment with a small private, planted terrace for guests, perfect for an early morning coffee, or perhaps an evening glass of wine. With the exception of steps down to the apartment front door, it is all on one level. (We can arrange an alternative access to the flat without the steps, if required). The Old Laundry is close to excellent public transport and taxi services. Within walking distance of nature reserves, beautiful beaches, historic buildings, museums, castles churches and the lovely Rye citadel area. We also welcome your well-behaved and house-trained dog/s - all breeds welcome. There is parking in the car-park opposite The Old Laundry - using contactless or the Ringo app - both are very reasonably priced. We are within a short drive/train journey of several larger towns: Hastings, Eastbourne, Ashford (with the huge Ashford International Station - where London can be only 40 minutes away and Paris in a couple of hours) and also the huge MacArthur Glen designer shopping outlet in Ashford. The Old Laundry is also close to areas of outstanding natural beauty, ancient woodlands, stately homes and gardens and the magnificent beaches at Camber Sands and Pett Level, so there is plenty of opportunity for long nature walks to relax and recharge We are consistently highly rated (9+) and our reviews speak for themselves so come and let us look after you and see for yourself ?
Hello and welcome.…. My name is Sue and together with my husband, Simon and my son, Josh we form the team at The Old Laundry. We live on site, so if there are any issues, we can easily be contacted. I’ve lived in Rye for over 50 years and Simon and Josh were both born here, so between us we have a wealth of local knowledge, especially with me being a Rye taxi-driver for 23 years and Simon and Josh formerly working in the local construction and fishing industry. Although we have all travelled, Rye is the place we call home and always love to come back to - I suppose we’re all home-birds really and we want to share that passion and love of our home and town with our guests. Rye is a very friendly place, full of quirky features, history and really, really nice people who just want to welcome guests and make them feel instantly at home. We’re always happy to recommend local eateries, pubs, days out and more. Simon is a keen photographer and I often use his stunning pictures on The Old Laundry’s social media account to highlight the beauty of our local woodlands, beaches, villages and towns. Josh loves his bicycle rides and can often be found at the beach, with his mountain bike. We do have several places in Rye where bikes (including E-bikes) can be hired and we can provide safe, lockable storage for your bicycles. And as for me, I love my dogs: we have two: Moush and NormaJean and they are my babies… and I also love to walk, collect sea-glass, read and potter about in the garden (I do love my roses! 🌹)so now you’ve met us virtually, we’d love it if you’d come and stay, so we can meet you face-to-face!
Rye is a Cinque Port and is very proud of that heritage. During her lifetime, we have had several visits from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother who was Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports. Rye has a wealth of history to share: smuggling, haunted inns and churchyards, famous filming locations, beautiful, picturesque cobbled streets, antiques, festivals, churches and listed timbered properties. Our lovely little town is famous for its Rye Bay Scallops (indeed, there is a festival dedicated to them in the Spring), it’s local Romney Marsh lamb, it’s local micro-breweries: The Waterworks and The Winery - The Waterworks being a Camra-awarded, quirky little pub which we in Rye are very proud of… and also it’s yearly International Jazz and Blues Festival in late August, which is a weekend-long celebration of all things musical… pop-up bands, street musicians, buskers, and of course the famous concerts in the beautiful St Mary’s church where international stars come to perform. Come and spend some time with us - explore, relax and recharge. Perhaps go bird-watching, walking, antique-hunting, maybe take a trip to the amazing Dungeness, perhaps take a ride on the miniature steam train at The Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway? All this is possible and more…. Rye and its stunning local area honestly have something for everyone - whether you’re a solo-traveller or a couple, come and let us look after you in our home-from-home and experience it for yourself.
