Company information

We love living in this area on the edge of the beautiful Mendip Hills and close to Bath Bristol and Wells. If you like architecture, theatre or Roman remains and who can forget the influence of Brunel or the beautiful Scissor arch in Wells Cathedral this the area for you. We are spoilt by the amount of National Trust Properties close-by along with the natural beauty of Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Caves and The Mendips themselves. There are fantastic walking and cycle routes close-by which meet up with the National Bicycle grid. Locally there is great birdwatching from the Levels to the Blagdon Lakes and a fantastic golf course right here in Farrington. There are many great pubs and gastro pubs in the area offering great local food, these are a must for any visit.

Property information

The Old Parsonage is very special. It dates back to 1680 when it was built by Henry and Mary Hole. Their son John inherited the house and married into the Champney Family of Orchardleigh and soon gentrified the house with the addition of the imposing front consisting of a long hallway internally and two frontal wings which gives a very French feel like a chateau to the house. The family died out and the house became the property of the Duchy of Cornwall and since then it had regular visits from the royal family including Prince Charles The Prince of Wales, King Edward V111 and King George V1, see history on website. The staircase is special with it's fluted newel posts and alternate barley twist balusters surmounted by a heavily moulded handrail. Pevsner in his Architectural Guides describes the house as Fine house perhaps c1680-90 of red sandstone. Since the 1960' it has been a restaurant with rooms and now it is a very successful B&B with TripAdvisor 5* rating and is loved and cared for by it's present owners Emilie and James Wellman

Neighbourhood information

History:In the Domesday book the village was known as Ferentone. The second part of the name is believed to come from the Gournays, its ancient possessors, including Robert de Gournay in 1225. Sir Thomas de Gournay was concerned in the murder of Edward II at Berkeley Castle, for which his estates were confiscated, and Farrington was later annexed to the Duchy of Cornwall. The parish was part of the hundred of Chewton. The manor house is believed to date from 1637 and the old parsonage from around 1700. Industry included coal mining on the Somerset coalfield from about 1780 but the local pits closed in the 1920s. There used to be an unmanned railway station or "halt" between 11 July 1927 and 2 November 1959, when the Bristol and North Somerset Railway line closed. We now have a very successful Farm Shop which produces local and organic produce. In addition Farrington Park is a very picturesque mature golf course with a sports and exercise centre. The Par 72 Duchy Course was opened in 1995 and has matured into a beautifully conditioned variety of parkland and lakeland golf holes. Situated in the Historic Triangle of the Great cities of Bath Bristol and Wells
