Company information

Jake & Annette Roskilly with the help of Shelley Thomas. Jake is a farmer amongst other things, Annette runs a campsite just above Coverack and Shelley will be living in The Old Post Office as she has kindly offered to help us out with the running of the Bed & Breakfast over the summer. This is a new venture for us all. Ben & Georgia, now both sadly deceased kindly left The Old Post Office to Jake. We have been working hard on the property over the winter, updating and changing the decor without hopefully loosing the character. We hope you like what we have done and enjoy staying.

Property information

The Old Post Office, Coverack was built in the year 1660 on an outcrop of rocks on the sea shore this building is steeped in history, and has had many uses over the years, listed as a house of historical interest with many of it's origins still featuring. In the days of smuggling it was the head quarters for the area. Then in the hey day of the Pilchard industry presses were used to extract the oil for the use in rush lamps, for lighting. On the outside wall on the seaward side there are still inset holes once used in the process of pressing the pilchards. Later the property became a public house were on special occasions the publican Mr Joe Lory would go by donkey to Mawgan to fetch a fiddler to provide music for the evening in a room that was called the 'Dancing Room' now the sitting room. Towards the end of the last century the property became the first village post office with the mail being delivered by horseback from Helston. In the 1914-18 war it became the headquarters for the home guard. Owned by the Roskilly family, it became a general store for many years, then a self catering holiday property and now to be re-incarnated as a Bed & Breakfast.

Neighbourhood information

Coverack is a small traditional fishing village with working harbour located on the Lizard Peninsula in an area of outstanding natural beauty with it's rugged coastline, beaches, coves and open moorland. The area has a fascinating History of smuggling and shipwrecks and is an area which attracts Geologists due to the unique rock types and geological structures. Some of the beaches can be busy in the summer but just a short walk along the coastal path will lead you to many quieter and more scenic coves. Heading south from Coverack is Porthbeer Cove, The Terence Coventry Sculpture Garden on the walk to Black Head Lookout Point, or heading north is Lowland Point of geological interest, a great circular walk to Roskillys and back across the fields. (Both recommended) Coverack harbour. A wonderful place to relax and watch the local fishermen land their catch, a favourite place for many locals and visitors to sit with a beer and Fish and chips on a summers evening. Coverack Beach is a relatively safe beach for swimming and a favourite haunt for wild swimmers. There is a windsurfing centre adjoining the B & B which also hires out kayaks and Stand-up paddle boards. Places to shop and eat. Just across from the B & B there is a community shop for general groceries and 'The Loft Cafe for great Coffee, Cakes and Ice Cream & more. On the harbour there is 'The Paris Hotel Pub' and The Lifeboathouse Restaurant and Fish & Chips. For more upmarket cuisine 'The Bay Hotel' along the beach front. Just outside the village, a lovely walk across the fields is Roskillys open for food cooked in their wood burning stoves and an Ice cream parlour selling their own Organic Ice cream. Also a great family day out, there are walks around the ponds, children can feed the pigs and ducks and see the Jersey cows grazing in the fields. The Coast colour canvas art gallery and Bowji gallery are also located at the farm.
