You’ll find our team hard at work in a traditional, converted stone carriage building in sleepy Elterwater, at the gateway of the stunning Great Langdale Valley. From here, we help people find all sorts of charming local hideaways, from converted barns to rambling stone-built parsonages. So whatever sort of Lake District break you’re looking for, give us a shout and we’ll use our in-depth local expertise to find you a place you’ll love.
Phone us and you’ll be talking to Denise, Helen, Pip or Julie – all with years of knowledge about what makes our region great. Whether you’re looking for walks, cream teas, paddling, peddling or paragliding, they’ll point you in the right direction. And if you need anything sorting out during your stay, just give us a buzz and our team of locally based housekeepers, handymen and problem solvers will be on it in a flash.
Best wishes, and take care.

Property information
The Old White Lion in Chapel Stile is a fantastic quaint Lakeland cottage dating from the 18th century. This lovely old cottage was once the village Inn – hence its name. Lovers of real ale may also be interested to know that their own beer used to be brewed on the premises. The lane on which the property stands was once the old road which ran through to Thrang Brow Quarry.
In its hey day it would have been bustling with life as the quarry workers called by for a drink on their way home. Now it is a quiet backwater, providing peace and tranquillity and fantastic views across the valley.
Accommodation comprises of a spacious lounge on the ground floor with feature beams and log burner, dining room, galley style kitchen and generous utility room with plenty of drying space and storage for outdoor equipment including bikes, walking boots and wet dogs! Leading off the utility room is a cloak room with WC and wash hand basin.
Upstairs there is a spacious master bedroom featuring an en-suite shower and WC, a double and twin bedroom and a separate family bathroom.
Neighbourhood information
In Chapel Stile, a gentle walk away, guests can find a well stocked local convenience store – the Langdale Co-op, Brambles Cafe and the welcoming Holy Trinity Church. Wainwrights Inn offers locally brewed ales and provides good quality homemade food. The famous climbers inn The Old Dungeon Ghyll, New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel and Stickle Barn Tavern (now owned by the National Trust) are just up the scenic Langdale Valley.
For those who wish to explore further afield, a bus stop is located opposite the Co-op. Buses are frequent and connect guests with the wider towns and outstanding scenery of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Leaving the car behind and jumping on a bus to explore the National Park not only helps to look after the spectacular landscape but also gives passengers the opportunity to see it without the challenge of negotiating narrow, and sometimes steep, country lanes or search for parking at your destination. By sitting back watching the landscape go by, the journey becomes part of your adventure!
Elterwater, the famous Britannia Inn and Slates Bistro are a short stroll away beside the magnificent maple tree. For fine dining, the welcoming Eltermere Inn is located over Elterwater’s stone bridge that spans the babbling River Brathay. Surrounded by extensive lawns framed with awe-inspiring views, the Eltermere Inn combines the highest standards of service, good food and informality.
The Old White Lion is also handily placed to access the Langdale Valley, 4 miles from the bustling town of Ambleside and close to neighbouring villages of Grasmere and Hawkshead.
