Sleeping up to 2 Adults (+ baby). Dogs: Only One dog accepted at an extra cost per stay. However they must be kept in the kitchen area and not in the bedroom/bathroom areas. Dogs are not allowed to be left in the property on their own. The Smiddy is a beautifully appointed, Listed detached Bothy converted from the Roshven estate ‘smithy’ along with the other farm steadings to form a cosy home from home within it’s own 26 acres of gardens and grounds. This recent conversion is maintained to a very high standard and offers many facilities including a new king-sized bed with Egyptian cotton sheets; full sized kitchen with everything we hope you’ll need and a table for dining together with a wood burning stove to add to the snug ambience. There is a freezer in the garage for Smiddy guests to use. Outside is plenty of parking and a place to store a boat or kayaks and a south facing terrace with seating and a table with chairs and cushions to enjoy a morning coffee or an afternoon glass of something delicious while restfully listening to the stream as it runs by and the chatter of garden birds. Less than a ten minute stroll in three directions are different beaches to enjoy without having to cross a road. Ideal for exploring, kayaking swimming or just sitting to enjoy the wildlife or watch the sun go down! The Smiddy is an easy walk of minutes to three beaches, all with their own particular merit & beauty? Vehicular access can be requested if necessary to one of them. Plus we are at the foot of Roshven a stunning ‘Corbet’ that is a relatively easy climb and provides views as far as Knoydart, the Cullin of Skye and the inner Hebrides not to mention Ben Nevis..... on a good day! A short drive can get our Guests in reach of many ‘Munros’, The Isle of Mull and all it has to offer, the wilderness of the Ardnamurchan peninsular and iconic Lighthouse and an easy drive from Loch Ness! Not to mention Knoydart & Skye!
We bought the ruined steadings from the then owner of Roshven House in 2003 and set to renovating them. Information on their transformation can be found in the cottage together with some detail on the history of the estate and area. The Smiddy was where we first lived while completing the other restorations and became the last to be fully converted and extended to what exists now. Our aim is to add another room to allow a separate bedroom but to date this has been unsuccessful with Planners. This doesn’t however detract from this cosy property nestled in this stunning location we have called home now for over 20 years. We now live in the ‘Old Mill’ house across the courtyard separated by the entrance drive and entirely detached from The Smiddy; thus offering as much privacy as our Guests might wish for. There is also another holiday let adjacent which also has its’ own parking, terrace and outlook so all of the dwellings can have the feeling of peace and quiet within their own spaces.
Roshven is a small community of about forty houses on the bank of the stunningly beautiful Loch Ailort in the western Highlands. It sits equidistant between the villages of Glenuig (Inn and community Shop) and Lochailort (Inn to re-open in 2024) which is on the famous ‘Road to the Isles’. There is a request Train station in Lochailort where the ‘Harry Potter’ train can be seen daily through the season on it’s way from Fort William to the nearest little town. The bustling seaside fishing port of Mallaig some twenty-five minutes drive from The Smiddy. Here everything from a ferry port to take you for a day trip to Skye, shopping for groceries or souvenirs and bars and restaurants can be found. Closer to home is the quaint coastal village of Arisaig where once again restaurants, cafes and an Inn can be found together with the marina from which journeys to ‘The Small Isles’ of Eigg, Muck, Rum and Canna can be taken. All of this information and more ideas than you’ll need to fill any holiday can be found in the cottage and we are always happy to assist with any itinerary or recommendations as we are proud of the beautiful and diverse area we call home. When you consider Roshven en route to the Ardnamurchan and the inner islands of the west coast; think sea meets mountains meets great food and stunning views/sunsets with a slower pace of life for some or an adrenaline rush for others.
