The area is rich in wildlife including seals, ospreys, guillemots, oystercatchers, and razorbills. The local boat trip Ecoventures, based in Cromarty offers exciting boat trips where whales can also be spotted. After a long day walking, golfing at Fortrose and Rosemarkie Golf Club/exploring the many stunning sights of the North Coast 500, guests can enjoy a delicious meal at Crofters, Cove Restauant, or IV10 then return to the peace and tranquility of their room, relax in the comfortable lounge with an extra-large TV or enjoy a drink at The Plough Inn/Union Tavern. It is recommended to stay a few days or even a full week at Tigh Na Mara because it is a wonderful basecamp for golfers/tourists from which to take day trips to explore NC500 attractions such as the Isle of Skye, Ullapool, Loch Ness, Clava Cairns or even John-O-Groats. Hi, I’m Helen, your friendly host at Tigh Na Mara (House by the sea) on the beautiful Black Isle on the iconic North Coast 500 route. I love welcoming guests and making them feel at home so I hope you will come to stay and enjoy the house and beach. I am more than happy to offer advice on places to visit in the surrounding area, such as the Salmon Leaps at Shin, Dunrobbin Castle, the Clava Cairns, Caledonian Canal, Loch Ness and more... It is such a pleasure to see guests enjoying Tigh Na Mara and all it has to offer on their well-earned holidays! I grew up in Inverness before working abroad and in London for many years as a teacher. It was always my dream to return to the Highlands as there is no other place like it... heaven on earth! My husband, from Ireland, fell in love with it too... We were so lucky to find Tigh Na Mara and have spent many years making gradual improvements, which is very much a labour of love and an absolute privilage. I spend a lot of my time running the business which I love, but I enjoy local walks, sitting in the sunshine, exploring the NC500, cooking, crafts, gardening, antiques, history, culture and travel. You might like to meet our lovely black Labrador, Beau (optional) - he is really fun-loving and adores playing with balls and stones on the beach, swimming in the sea and cuddles and is always happy to join guests on walks if you would like to bring him along, athough he is an elderly boy now so can't walk long distances. While my husband Andrew is not currently hands-on in the front of house business, he’s always friendly, and I’m supported by my wonderful helpers and friends and have family nearby. Our son Harry is an architect and lives in London but he loves visiting when he can. I’m really passionate about Tigh Na Mara and feel truly blessed to live in such a beautiful part of Scotland, meeting so many lovely people from all around the world-especially those who leave lovely reviews and return year after year.
Tigh Na Mara is located in the heart of the charming coastal village of Rosemarkie, on Scotland’s famous North Coast 500 route. Just steps from a golden sandy beach and the Moray Firth, it’s an ideal base for exploring the Scottish Highlands. Our neighbourhood is a haven for wildlife lovers. From your room or the beach, you may spot dolphins, seals, ospreys, sea otters, cormorants, guillemots, oystercatchers, and razorbills. A short stroll takes you to Chanonry Point, one of the best places in the world to see wild dolphins close to shore. Sometimes we even have whales! Rosemarkie itself is full of character, with a strong sense of community and rich history. We have a nearby local SPAR and a holistic shop called Panacea which offers hebal remedies, cystals and reiki treatments. Visit the Groam House Museum, showcasing local Pictish art and the life of famed geologist Hugh Miller. Discover the historic Rosemarkie Church, or enjoy scenic walks to Fairy Glen Falls and the mystical Clootie Well. Local busses stop in the village to take you to the stunning Highland capital, Inverness or Cromarty where you will find Hugh Millers house, many arts and crafts shops, pubs, eateries and a small cinema! For dining and refreshment, try the Crofters café-bar, the welcoming Plough Inn, or enjoy homemade treats at the beach café and Maureen’s iconic ice cream van. The Rosemarkie Golf Club, set against dramatic sea views, is a favourite with visitors. There are also lovely walks along the coast to Fortrose and its cathedral ruins. Further afield, enjoy easy day trips to Loch Ness, Clava Cairns, Cromarty, and nearby castles, distilleries, and Highland landmarks. Regular buses connect Rosemarkie with Cromarty and Inverness, the capital of the Highlands. Whether you’re here for romance, adventure, history, or tranquillity, the neighbourhood offers something special. From geology to golf, dolphins to waterfalls, this area is full of wonder—just waiting to be explored.
