Hidden gem. Best sleep I had for a long time. The area is amazing. We are definitely returning here and we have booked directly with Nikoleta. The house has everything you can think of and a lot more than what advertised. The fishing gear made me...

In a very remote and quiet location, Twin Deer Lodge had a unique sense of history. Whilst an old building at heart, Nicoletta has added modern and stylish touches to create a lovely space for a break from routine.

Dear guests I hope you will enjoy my highlands home as much as I do with my husband and 2 boys. It is a fascinating place that will offer you tranquillity and a space to charge your batteries! I originally come from Greece and made UK my home some 30 years ago. My husband a true Londoner cannot yet believe the only traffic jam in the area is caused by cows, sheep or deer crossing the road! We all enjoy wild swimming, kayaking, fishing and exploring nature. You are welcome to borrow our gear and we just ask that you leave as you have found. This place has It all! The private water source and the fantastic views are what attracted us but the river at the end of the garden with a private natural pool is an amazing added bonus! If you can manage the low temperature then go for a swim! We have tried to make the place as comfy as possible and if there is something you would like to see we will do our best to organise for you. Our humble ask is no food is to be taken in bedrooms and please leave place as you would wish to find. Nearest grocery store in Strontian and then for bigger shopping you can go to Fort William or Oban.
We bought the house in December 2024 and we have great plans for renovations. We are also planning to go completely off grid by 2030. This will help us all enjoy the place more but also keep prices reasonable. This is not a government promise, this is careful and considerate family planning so bound to happen sooner rather than later. Twin deer lodge was built in 1947 and was a present from Finland to the UK for the war contribution made by the UK and was aimed to accommodate the forestry staff back then. 10 houses were delivered by a converted boat to the Loch Shiel pier (you can only see the poles now and a new pier next to it) and they were then carried by horse carts to their current location in error. The place was later used as accommodation for the local miners see more info: Ardnamurchan Rocks | Strontian Mines (wildardnamurchan.com) From the 10 original houses only 8 are left now as numbers 7 and 8 went down on a fire some 40 years ago. In order to arrive at Twin Deer Lodge, you must take the route from Strontian to Polloch. If you take the ferry to get to Strondian, note last ferry departs at 9:20pm from Corran and takes you to Ardgour. Runs very frequently and no need to prebook. Alternatively you can add a few miles to your trip and go from Fort William to Strontian, or Glenfinnan to Strontian via Acharacle and then Strontian to Polloch. If you choose Ferry route cost is 11 pounds and booklet with 30 tickets for 30 trips that is about 80 pounds. Avoid route Glenfinnan to Polloch which is only 16 miles but it is a forestry road and closed for some parts of the year. Polloch is amazing and in the heart of Glen Hurrich. If you love hiking, fishing, swimming, kayaking and nature this is the place for you.
Enjoy the views explore the lochs, take a walk in the area of Polloch and Loch Shiel, Ardnamurchan and The West Highlands and do explore the river at the back of the garden! You can go Salmon or trout fishing. Wild swimming or kayaking fairly safe and not deep, where you see a couple of boats past Polloch on the way to Glenfinnan. I will ask that you follow safety instructions and please remember never leave a fire unattended or children unattended. Do wear suitable footwear if you go for a walk or hiking and do consider types of clothing you will need etc. Kayaks and bicycles for hire are available in Strontian. Do visit the Strontian shop that will prove to be your local guide and supplier of almost everything. Nice souvenir shop next to the Strontian shop which you must pay a visit. Also do visit the pottery store you will find amazing things and these little unique presents. Shopping in Fort William we did enjoy as well as the local pubs and the Highland Cinema. Supermarkets in Fort William are Aldi, Morrisons, Lidl and off course M&S. We recommend visiting local distilleries like Ardnamurchan and Ben Nevis or why not travel a bit further and see more distilleries? See the map on the back of the kitchen door or follow the link. Or how about visiting Loch Ness and Fort Augustus? Check our bookcase and have a look at the book with Castles and do pick one or 2 to visit. I hope that your stay will be unforgettable and please do not hesitate to contact me should you need anything at all. Love Nikoletta and George
