Located just south of the bustling resort town of Kobuleti, Tsikhisdziri boasts stunning beaches with a backdrop of lush greenery. But beneath the surface of this scenic village lies a fascinating past.
Tsikhisdziri is home to an archaeological site believed to be the ruins of the ancient Roman city-fortress of Petra. Built by Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century, Petra played a key role in the Lazic War with Sasanian Iran. The Romans themselves demolished the city to prevent its capture by the enemy, leaving behind a treasure trove for archaeologists.
Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this once-powerful fortress, imagining the battles that raged here centuries ago. The historical significance is further enhanced by the nearby "Devils' Fortress," mentioned in 18th-century Georgian chronicles.
