The settlement of Pnaka located on the north side of Samos, is in a beautiful almost tropical region featuring excellent views to Kampos and to Souvala Castle. Tradition has it that fairies danced at night. The famous Pnaka spring flows abundant, crystal clear and cool water throughout the year, providing the neboring areas with water. On the east side of the village square is the chapel of Saints Constantine and Helen, dating from the middle of the 19th century, while on the west side of the village square is the first olive oil mill in the area and one of the oldest on the island, which was converted into a restaurant at the end of the 20th century which today is called the well known Pnaka Taverna. Next to the spring the old path is preserved, which leading south to Vourliotes village which is situated at an altitude of 300 meters at the slopes of Mt. Ambelos. Vourliotes is one of the older villages of the island, was established in late 16th or early 17th century and is one of the most scenic settlements of the island with narrow streets and very nice old traditional houses. During the Early Christian period 4th-7th century until the desolation of Samos in the 15th century the role of Pnaka settlement was very important, as it had water, the high ground protecting the area from Arab, pirate and other raiders at that times, and was associated with other settlements and castles of the area, such as the Prophet Elias Castle (Svala), Lazarοu castle, and Castle of Loulouda. When the island was resettled again in the middle of the 16th century, Samians returned from Chios and settled again in the wider area of Pnaka and Kampos during the rule of the Turkish Admiral Kilic Ali Pasha. churches in the area Saint John the Baptist and the ruins of Apostle Thomas were built in the late 17th century, as well as Saints Constantine and Helen dating from the 19th century.
