Ciara O'Brien, Owner & Executive Host warmly welcomes you to Mitchelstown
BARNAHOWN is situated in an 1800s farmhouse which has been carefully restored during 2023/4 to bring it back to its former glory while also installing every creature comfort a guest could need. The regenerative approach to work at BARNAHOWN has included lime rendering the original stone walls outside and repointing much of the limestone construction inside so that you can truly enjoy and appreciate the old bones of the property. BARNAHOWN is set on an acre site in a former farmyard providing plenty of space for outdoor dining and drinks. The property is also extensively planted and you can enjoy roaming in the wildflower meadow with lots of native Irish planting. The accommodation was 'born sustainable' taking advantage of the many opportunities to run business in a low-impact way including solar-powered energy, EV charging and a zero single-use policy.
After 20 years working in the corporate world and staying at every imaginable accommodation, Ciara decided to make the move into full-time hospitality in 2023. A Mitchelstown native, Ciara knows this area inside-out: all of the hidden gems and new finds for you to enjoy. A keen hiker, Ciara can count summiting Kilimanjaro in Tanzania among her many accomplishments. When she's not hosting, Ciara is most often found out and about on the Galtee and Ballyhoura mountains and loves nothing more than helping visitors to discover the local area. Also a keen foodie, Ciara enjoys the best of Irish food and beverages herself and is keen to ensure each guest finds something new from our local producers during their visit. The majority of suppliers to the guesthouse are located within a 20km radius of the property, and BARNAHOWN supplies its own eggs and kitchen garden. In addition, the BARNAHOWN honesty bar provides you with the opportunity to sample beverages from a range of local producers including Eight Degrees in Mitchelstown.
Set in the heart of the Munster Vales region - an area of outstanding natural beauty combining five unique mountain ranges plus the rivers Suir and Blackwater - BARNAHOWN's location will provide visitors to the area with access to a multitude of wellness, adventure-based and food-focused activities and experiences during their stay. Through Ciara's bespoke Barnahown concierge service, solo travellers and groups will be able to book and enjoy several daily excursions which also include the likes of forest bathing, Ballyhoura mountain biking, Mitchelstown Cave, Blackwater River fishing and Suir River kayaking, along with her very own 'Taste The Galtees' food experiences. There is also a vibrant pop-up and food truck scene in the local area which Ciara loves to explore and sample so that she can provide her guests with the latest recommendations in local dining. And if you're visiting for work or business, as a former executive Ciara has set-up BARNAHOWN to meet all your needs. Each room is supplied with free fibre broadband, there is a communal working area to get you out of your room and you can relax after a hard day with something nice from the honesty bar and chill out with a live match or catch-up on the latest from Bake-Off.
