Built in 1879 as a large pub, shop and guest house, Johnston's has a long and varied history in beautiful Kinvara. The large, second-story apartment is in the centre of the village and just a stone's throw away from the local shops, pubs, harbour, farmer's market and churches. There is a beach just a short drive away. Kinvara hails as the gateway to the Burren. We live next door, and come and go a lot.
I am the fifth generation to be living in this house, and wear that honor proudly. I was raised in Connecticut but spent each summer here with my parents running a hostel. I now manage all bookings for my parents and live next door to the rental full time. I'll always be just a phone call away if any issues arise or you need any advice on where to go or what to do.
The stunningly picturesque 16th century castle, Dunguaire Castle, is a gorgeous 1 km walk along the bay from the apartment and perhaps the most photographed castle in Ireland. Kinvara has numerous wonderful restaurants, bistros, coffee shops and pubs. This apartment is in the heart of the village, across from the famous Tully's Pub, so finding a place to eat, drink and walk is as easy as it gets! Kinvara Quay is a beautiful place to picnic, as there is a green park along the harbour with benches available for resting. The historically important, turf-hauling sailboats called "hookers"are often moored in the harbour. Kinvara sits at the gateway to the Burren, which is a landscape of bedrock incorporating a vast cracked pavement of glacial-era limestone, with cliffs and caves, fossils, rock formations and archaeological sites. It's a stunning area to explore! Kinvara is a small village, so strolling the streets is the best way to go. Otherwise, buses to Galway City stop in Kinvara several times each day en route to and from The Cliffs of Moher. So, you can easily get to the cliffs or to Galway City by bus if you choose to do so.
