About the Host Hi! I’m the owner of NEMARU. In 2011, I completed a solo cycling trip across all 47 prefectures of Japan. After gaining experience working at various guesthouses around the country, I returned to my hometown and, with the help of fellow travelers, renovated an old traditional house. In February 2017, I opened “Nagaoka Guesthouse NEMARU.” Since then, we’ve welcomed over 1,000 guests from Japan and abroad. In 2020, we rebranded as NEMARU Stay & Discovery, and in 2022, we became NEMARU – Honto Gurashi, a private whole-house inn designed for guests to enjoy books and local life in Niigata at their own pace. Now married and a proud father, I’m also continuing to improve my English—so feel free to speak slowly with me! 😊 Looking forward to hosting you in the peaceful countryside of Nagaoka.
About Our Neighborhood – A Charming Countryside Town in Nagaoka Our town became part of Nagaoka City during Japan’s municipal mergers in the Heisei era. Nestled between rice fields to the south, gentle hills to the west, and the Shinano River to the east, it’s a compact town centered around a small shopping street. Historically, this was a castle town—home to three different versions of Yoita Castle over time. In the Edo period, it flourished as a lively river port, connecting trade between inland areas and what is now Niigata City. Although trains no longer run through the area, the old railway route has been transformed into a pedestrian path that crosses the town. Today, it’s a peaceful walking trail enjoyed by local residents. You’ll find all the essentials here, including a supermarket, convenience stores, and a home improvement center. Throughout the year, the town hosts various events and community festivals—especially in summer, when almost every weekend features some kind of celebration. It’s a quiet, nature-rich town in Japan’s snowy countryside—ideal for slowing down and experiencing authentic local life.
