Neighbourhood information
The name "Imoarai" (in Japanese, 一口, いもあらい) comes from the historical practice of washing potatoes here and the area's former role as the only outlet for the Oguraike Pond, which no longer exists. Traces of using the river to wash and transport farm produce remain. Another theory suggests that "Imoarai" originates from "Imuharai" (斎む祓い or いむはらい), meaning "purifying one's body to avoid impurity or disaster," as the area served as Kyoto’s entrance from Osaka. It is also known as the birthplace of Kujo negi (Kyoto's specialty Japanese leek).
Highlights of the Area
Cherry Trees Along the River
Cherry trees line both sides of the Maegawa River near “Higashi Imoarai,” creating a beautiful sight during the blooming season. This area, popular for relaxation, was chosen as one of “Kyoto's 200 Best Natural Beauties” in 1995.
Former Yamada Family Residence (Kyu Yamadaya Jyutaku)
The Yamada family led 13 villages in the Mimakogo area during the Edo period and managed the Oguraike Pond’s fishing industry. Their residence, with its gate, long wall, and main house, is a registered cultural property. The exhibition room includes materials on the now-vanished Oguraike Pond.
