The Portside Inn was the most beautiful place we have ever stayed. From the moment you walk in, there is a wonderful woodsy smell, a fantastic kitchen, beautiful bathroom, comfortable bed, and the decor all had such a hand curated touch to it....

"Staple: Redefining the Future of Travel" "Creating places that people are drawn to—not just for a visit, but to be part of something greater." At Staple, we are more than just a hotel development company. We design destinations—places where travelers and locals connect, where history meets modern creativity, and where each visit adds value to the place itself. "From Local Roots to Global Impact" Our projects span across Japan, each deeply rooted in its community: Tokyo, Nihonbashi – "K5" and "SOIL Nihonbashi," urban spaces that redefine city life. Setoda, Setouchi – "SOIL Setoda" and "Azumi Setoda," embracing the rhythm of island living. Hakodate – "Portside Inn Hakodate," a reborn historical building connecting travelers to the city's past. Nagato, Okayama, Aoshima – Thoughtfully crafted developments that celebrate each region’s unique identity. Every project is designed not just for visitors, but with the local community in mind. We believe that true hospitality is about co-creating spaces that bring lasting value—to both the people who live there and those who journey through. "Designing Experiences, Not Just Hotels" Staple’s spaces are built around experiences. Historic renovations, local craftsmanship, and contemporary aesthetics come together to create hotels, cafes, and creative spaces that tell a story. From globally recognized design hotels to cultural hubs where locals and visitors interact, our work goes beyond accommodation—it creates moments that stay with you. "Beyond Tourism: A Journey That Creates Value" We believe travel should not be about consuming a place, but adding to it. Our projects do not simply restore old buildings—they give them new life. They do not just attract travelers—they connect them with the community. By blending history, design, and local engagement, we are shaping a new way of travel—one where each journey leaves something meaningful behind. At Staple, we don’t just build places. We create destinations worth returning.

Property information

A One-Group-Per-Day Exclusive Inn by Hakodate Port Nestled by the shores of Hakodate Port, this exclusive inn welcomes only one group per day. The "Old Town" area, where remnants of Meiji-era architecture and cobblestone alleys still linger, tells a story of the past. The building, originally constructed in 1885 as a shipping company, has been revived, bringing a new breath of life to its historic walls. Since Hakodate Port opened to foreign trade in the late Edo period, ships from Russia, Britain, France, and the United States must have come and gone. Along with them, diverse cultures flowed into this town, blending together in a dynamic melting pot. It was a place where goods and ideas arrived from across the sea, and where the Japanese of the time looked upon foreign cultures and knowledge with admiration. Here, history and nature exist in harmony, offering new discoveries with every season. You might visit the morning market to gather fresh ingredients, then cook in the kitchen while listening to jazz records. Strolling up and down the sloping streets, you may stumble upon a charming little café or a delightful restaurant. Enjoy a relaxing soak in the spacious bathtub of your room, or step out to a local hot spring, a lively meeting place for the town’s people. Take the city tram to Goryokaku Park to admire cherry blossoms in spring or lush greenery in summer. If you venture further to Onuma Quasi-National Park, you can immerse yourself in the vast wilderness, listening to the clear songs of wild birds and the rhythmic tapping of woodpeckers. As you spend your time here, allow yourself to reflect on the 140 years this building has stood, witnessing the changes of the town and its people. And above all, enjoy a stay that is uniquely yours.

Neighbourhood information

"Hakodate’s Western District: Where History and Culture Meet" "A port town where the past and present intertwine, creating new stories with every visit." Hakodate’s Western District is a historic port town shaped by cultural exchange. Since opening to the world, it has welcomed influences from Russia, Britain, and France, blending them into a unique identity. Cobblestone streets, red brick warehouses, and Western-style mansions tell stories of a time when ships carried not just goods but ideas. Today, these spaces have been reimagined into cafés, bars, and creative hubs, ensuring that history continues to evolve. "A Journey That Feels Like Belonging" In the Western District, travel is not just about sightseeing—it’s about experiencing daily life. Visit Hakodate Morning Market, where fresh seafood and seasonal produce bring the port’s flavors to life. Walk up Hachiman-zaka, taking in breathtaking views of the sea and city. Enjoy cafés and bars with history, where a cup of coffee or a glass of wine connects you to the past. Relax in Yunokawa Onsen, soaking in the warmth that locals have cherished for generations. "More Than a Visit—A Story to Be Part Of" Here, history is not just preserved—it is lived. Every street, every building, and every encounter adds to the rich tapestry of this timeless port town. Let Hakodate’s Western District be more than just a destination. Let it be a place where your journey becomes part of its story.
